Corsair Vengeance Question

I have heard that you can not just add in sticks of RAM if you want to upgrade. Lets say I bough an 8gb kit of off Amazon and wanted to add another for a total of 16gb, that is not possible and I would have to buy a 16gb kit to replace the current kit of ram. Is this true? Any workarounds? Thanks!

It would probalby work if the new RAM is the same spec as the existing...not sure about performance impacts though, and not sure if any performance impact is actually large enough to be of concern.
