cant seem to update always at 10.7.4 after reboot

I am trying to update from 10.7.4 to 10.8.1 here are the things I have tried

1. Installed the update directly, rebooted, still at 10.7.4
2. Installed the update directly, did the instructions for xmove, booted to the xmove partition, system just reboots never tries to install still stuck at 10.7.4
3. Run UniBeast, reboot to unibeast usb, system just reboots still stuck at 10.7.4


what am I missing?

Are you missing Mountain Lion? Have you bought it and installed it to your system? You can update to 10.8.1 only if you have 10.8.0 installed.

Maybe I am getting my numbers wrong. I went to the app store and bought Mountain Lion. But I can't seem to get my 10.7.4 build to update to it.

actually I'm having the same problem.. i bought mountain lion from the app store downloaded it and now every time i "install" it after reboot I'm still at 10.7.....

You need to do the entire process just like you were installing lion in the first place. for me I had to get unibeast again, create the usb, boot from the usb and go from there. just dont reformat your primary HD.
