Heh. I'll report back if the Samsung drive I'm getting works or not. Worry not.

I currently have a GTX 460 as listed under my name on the left, and I can't get it running properly on OS X. I'll be ordering this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product and this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product once I get paid on Thursday and I'm wondering whether or not that dual-fanned XFX 6870'd work. I know someone here said that any XFX 6870 would work, but I wanna be sure of it.

Before I do that, I'm gonna install that DVD burner there and then try and get JPA's GTX 460 method working...

Thanks,
Shiggitay2

Why not go for the sony optiarc? It is a through and through proven compatible and problem free performer. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118039

Have you considered the Asus 6870? Even though the XFX is slightly overclocked compared to the Asus I'll bet the Asus card performs at the same if not a higher level than the XFX. My Asus 6850 is beating some of the 6870's in cinebench, despite its lower stats on paper. Plus the Asus card has been tested and confirmed a number of times.

ASUS yes

ASUS EAH6870/2DI2S/1GD5 Radeon HD 6870 - 44 fps

old model http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121401 - 44 fps
new model - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121418 not info in hacks

i like XFX, asus or HIS...

Heh. As I've been saying I'll take my chances with the XFX 6870 I posted I plan on getting. I like the 2 fan design. I trust such the most. I don't want some shoddy 1 fan designed card to crap out on my on full load. I also like the idea of it being silent when under full load. That's a plus.

You know I noticed something about that. I noticed on my XFX 5870 that I originally got for this build and the xfx 5770s I have had in the past they were always pretty warm on idle. Without running anything whatsoever (just idling the desktop) warm air was always pouring out of the vents and the GPU backplate was pretty toasty. I noticed that on idle the Asus 6850 is cool to the touch and no warm air coming off it. this worried me at first. after touching the exposed heat pies and finding them cool I was alarmed that the cooler plate may not be making good contact with the GPU. my laser probe and finger probe both tell me that the GPU is also not getting warm. I am wondering if this is an asus vs XFX thing or a 5xxx vs 6xxx thing. All I know is every card I have had up to this point ran warm (not hot, just warm) as long as it was on, and I considered this normal, and the Asus barely raises above ambient during idle, and stays pretty darn cool under full load. The only thing I don't like about the Asus design is that to accomplish that coolness under load it just dumps hot air into the case. But then again, so does just about every multi fan setup. Don't be too quick to judge a single vs 2 or 3 fan cooler. In series fans pushing onto a shallow narrow heatsink can fight each other instead of helping each other; creating areas of high and low pressure in the cooler.

I am excited to see your screen shot from cenibench.

I'm fairly certain that Samsung optical drives are known to prevent your hackintosh from sleeping properly. It will function fine, and if you don't plan to put the computer to sleep, it will be a fine choice.

He seems pretty set on the hardware he has already chosen. If the Samsung gives him any grief its only a ~$20 mistake.
