Sorted it!
BIOS setting for onboard VGA needs to be set to initialise only if external graphics aren't available. From this thread:

Massively reduced my boot time.
Pretty sure on the updatehelper blog post there were a few people saying they had it working, so I don't think I'm entirely daft for having tried.
I found a fanless 8400GS in the end though.
I have this too, I have basically the Micro version of the OP's board & an i7-2600K. It just flies booting from my SSD until I apply the updatehelper & combo update, then apparently the sandybridge stuff actually gets in the way.
Anyone any ideas? I dual boot so it's kinda a bummer that OSX...
I have that board and the i7, struggling a bit at least with Snow Leopard to get on-board graphics going... Works fine with a card in though (I have an 8400GS at my disposal but it's one with a fan and it's way too loud, so would like to get the IGP going.)
