"OS X Can't Start up from this disk"

When I go to install/upgrade Mavericks, I can select my current installation but it says that it can't startup from that partition. I'm currently running 10.8.5 and dual booting Windows 8.

At what step in the guide are you? It is not clear from your description. And what "says that it can't startup..."?

At the disk selection screen. Where you choose which disk/partition you want to install OS X. Literally the second screen in the installation. Like I said, I'm installing onto an existing installation of 10.8.5.

Is your disk partitioned as GPT? Check in Disk Utility.

I didn't think of that. I assumed it was GPT. It's not. It's MBR. I didn't even know OS X could boot from MBR. I'm backing up my data as I type this so I can reformat my drive as GPT.

It can boot from MBR, but not modified, the OS X installer will not install to an MBR.

I have that exact problem, too.
Although in the Disk Utility it says that the harddrive with my Mountain Lion installation is GUID and the separate hardrive on which I have Windows installed is MBR.
Any experience or help in that regard?

What problem?

I can't select the Mountain Lion harddrive in the disk selection screen, right after the language selection of the Mavericks Installation.

Edit: I just realized that this thread was original posted in a notebook sub-forum. I am running a desktop system, but replied since this is the exact same issue I have.

What is the error message? Show a screen shot of what you see in Disk Utility.
