the guide that i am thinking about using :

http://www.mattbrandenburg.com/2010/08/ ... 9-mac-pro/

is telling me to use an i7 860, which has been discontinued (atleast on newegg.com)

my question is: can i use any i7 in its place? is there a certain one that performs better then others? im currently looking at the 870 or the 950 (want to keep the processer under $300)

is there any others that i should look at?

what do the numbers after i7 mean?

Thanks!!!

870 is what i'm using and an easy overclock to 3.5ghz some guys have it to 4.2ghz

A chip that starts with an 8, like the 870 is for the socket 1156 motherboards.

so his post tells me to use an 860,

since that is discontinued, will an 870 be the right one for me to use?

Thanks!

all around, general purpose machine

Then, bang for buck, you're probably waaaaay over powering it. Which, hey, if you got the moolah theres no problem with that. But unless you are doing really intense work on your station, you may not notice the difference between an i3, an i5, and an i7, which have a tremendous difference in price.

Plus, you can always upgrade later when the price comes down.

I think the i5 750 or 760 is the one for you. Only thing you lose really is Hyperthreading... which for what you describe really isn't necessary.

Check out the i7 875. May be better for over clocking than the 870.
I have the 870 and didn't know there was an 875, otherwise I would've purchased that instead.
