OK, step one has gone well -- I created a brand-new USB stick based on 10.8.2 with legacy USB selected and it booted on the first try without the safe mode flag. Trying to do a clean install now.

Well, what was weird about it all was that it booted fine into safe mode on the HD with 10.8.2 right after I installed the MB, so definitely one OS boot worked fine. After I added the modded bios nothing was able to boot. Then when I rolled back to the un-modded bios, nothing was able to boot...
