4770k @ 4.5Ghz on Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H [SUCCESS]

I had been rocking my 3770k-MSI Z77A-G43-7970 HD setup for a while now and had been very happy with it. I was able to comfortably get the 3770k to 4.7Ghz with temps at 28c idle and 72c full load with a Corsair H100 cooler. It was stable aside from some usual audio issues and relatively fast with GeekBench scores in the high 17,000s. The 7970 3GB card was pushing 3 1080p displays and a 40" 4K screen just fine and all was peachy until the 10.9.2 update.

After applying 10.9.2 it all went to hell. Machine wouldn't boot from the SSD or from the install USB, kept throwing very strange "DeadBeef" errors in verbose and no matter what combination of commands I tried (pretty much all of them) I could not get the machine to boot. After about 5 hours of messing with it I lost my patience and said "screw it" and headed down to MicroCenter to pick up a new board and cpu figuring that if i was going to spend the time rebuilding it, I might as well use new hardware.

So, with a cpu and board swap to a 4770k and Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H, I was on my way to formatting a SSD and reinstalling. No problems what so ever installing on the board even with the Radeon 7970 HD installed and hooked up. Install was uneventful, MultiBeast installed perfectly and with some simple mods in Chameleon Wizard, I had all 4 monitors back up and running and everything seemed fine. Then came the over clocking...

On my 3770k, over clocking was about as easy as it gets. Turn the core voltage up to 1.23, change the multiplier to 47, adjust the Vrin as needed, done. Ran great. On the 4770k, not so much. After several hours of playing, core voltages closer to 1.3 and I was able to get it to 4.5Ghz. Ok, well maybe the new chip will make up in efficiency over the old one... Nope. With the H100 cooler, my idle temps were hovering around 40c and as soon as I loaded up the system with the "Yes Test", the temps shot up to 91c with the H100 screaming at full power before locking up. Over the past week I have reset the cooler, different thermal paste, etc and with no effect. Basically the 4770k is ok at 4.5Ghz, but it needs some serious cooling to do it.

So I decided it was time to move onto a custom loop. Back down to Microcenter and picked up a Apogee Drive II pump/block, a XSPC RX240 radiator, XSPC DualBay reservoir, hoses, fittings, ect. So now after some fiddling, everything is back to normal, the machine is running perfect aside from the SSDT jump bug from 800mhz to 3.5Ghz (I do have 10 steps from 3.5-4.5 working though). With the Vcore set to 1.25V, the Ring Bus at 35x and the Vrin at 1.9v, the machine is idling at 30c because the Noctua PWM fans on the radiator are spinning at 300rpm but at full load it sits at a cool 62-64c even after a entire overnight stress test.

And now that the machine is dialed in, I was right, the efficiency is making up for the loss of clock speed from the 3770k. My Novabench scores are over 1900 and my Geekbench score is over 19000.

As you can see from the pics, I had to modify my Corsair Carbide 500R a bit to fit the new RX240. It's a bit thicker than the H100 radiator which used to sit under that cover.

I have the z87x-ud5h board and the 4770k. I am able to get it to 4.4GHz on Air (Cooler-master Hyper 212 Evo). It doesn't seem to need that much more voltage than 3.5/3.9. I am using the offset/adaptive voltage method for both core and uncore volts. I cannot post my exact settings here as I am working and don't have access to the machine right now.

I ran Intel Extreme Tuning Utility for 30 mins a few times and the temps never go above 78. If I run something like Prime95 or (even worse) Intel Burn Test, the temps hit 95 within seconds. Then again, they hit 90 within seconds on stock speed! I've since learnt that neither Prime or IBT are good for Haswell and can overvolt, then again, it doesn't appear this assertion is unanimous. Personally I don't like my stock-speed processor hitting 95C with an after-market cooler!

Are you using / have you tried adaptive voltage or are you running Vcore at 1.25 24/7 with no voltage scaling?
 
Actually I did the same thing last night.

I have had a few random hard freezes over the past couple days with the core voltage set to a fixed number and even backed it off to 1.24v while still being able to boot at 4.5Ghz which seemed to help a bit, but was still getting a random hard freeze up every day or so.

Last night I set the core voltage to "Normal" in the bios and then set the Vcore Offset to +0.1000 while leaving the Vrin manually set to 1.9v Everything booted fine and seems to run fine in OSX during some normal use (Photoshop, Handbrake, etc.), so I then ran the "Yes Test" again on all 8 threads to peak the cpu to 100% overnight last night and the vcore never got above 1.23v with the die temps peaking at 59c.

The machine is still running the Yes test and I am periodically checking it here from work via VNC and it seems to be doing just fine.

It seems like these Haswell chips are a little more picky about how you go about giving it the voltage needed to OC, but so far it is looking like the offset method might provide the most stable results overall.

I'll post more results over the next few days, but if this proves successful, I plan on moving up in speed until I find the chips limit now that I have the temps under control and have some head room to push further.
 
[SUB]I wasn't able to get to 4.5GHz (Air), but at 4.4GHz (uncore multiplier at 40), I find I can give the CPU Vcore offset even less than 0.1 (between 0.075 and 0.08) if I remember correct, and not get lockups after a 30min IntelXTU test. I do think my voltage went slightly higher than you though under load (might be as my uncore multi is higher?). Could also be the following...

Not sure if you board BIOS is exactly the same as the UD5H but I imagine it is v similar. What do you have set for "CPU Voltage Load Line Calibration" and "PWM phase control" ? I have both set to Extreme perf. I believe these values affect how much voltage will scale when using the offset/adaptive methods of CPU Vcore voltage and CPU uncore voltage (aka CPU ring core voltage).

There's so many damn settings on this board, it's a minefield! Tis good to touch base with someone going through the same / similar process![/SUB]
 
Just a quick update.

I managed to get the 4770k to 4.6ghz stable, but it takes a large amount of voltage and pushes my custom cooling loop to its max.

Running the "normal" Vcore setting in the bios, and then +0.1900v in the vcore offset, which in Prime 95 takes the Vcore up to 1.42v, it boots and runs totally fine for hours.

Temps stay stable around 81c with all 8 threads maxed out in Prime95, but I think I am going to go back to 4.5ghz and call it a day with an "average oc".
 
Nevermind figured it out had to turn off C and P states in boot.plist

Now I just have to keep on clocking. :D

I kernel panic every time I clock over 4.3ghz. I have XMP set to so that my memory is at 2400. Turned off EIST.

My smbios is just the one generated by Chameleon Wizard for the MacbookAir 6.2. I don't have anything in the boot.plist for p/c states, but I do have DropSSDT=Yes and am running a proper SSDT for any speed I am clocking to (4.4, 4.5, 4.6 and 4.7).

Other than that I have EIST enabled in the bios and I am getting proper speed stepping from 3.5-4.5ghz, but get the weird 800mhz-3.5ghz jump that others have reported on the Haswells.
 
I have an i7 2600k and can run it stable up to 4.7GHz on air with windows. I can't find a SSDT that will let me go past 4.2GHz on OS X. I get a KP every time I try to go past it. When I first built this I managed to find one that allowed me to pass 4.2GHz but I can't find it anymore.

So any tips to get past 4.2GHz?
 
I have SSDT's for 4.4-4.8Ghz for 3570k, 3770k and 4770k. Not sure they would work with the 2600k but I can upload them if you want to try.
 
Congrads OP! Good to learn everything's running alright now.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you guys managed to OC the chip beyond 4.3GHz and still boot into OS X?

I'm on the same chip + Z87XOC. No luck as soon as I clock it 4.3GHz+ :\
The chip itself get do 4.8GHz
