It seems a number of things prevent the system from finishing boot without -x. First, it seems that VoodooHDA prevents it. I'm not sure why, but no copy of VooodooHDA that I've found and tried to load seems to work. With the latest VoodooHDA 2.8.5, I get errors even before I reboot about it...
