Assuming it is a 6-series chipset, pretty typical Sandy Bridge laptop...

You will need to patch DSDT in order to reach the installer because of the 1600x900 display.

Extract native DSDT with Linux (/sys/firmware/acpi/tables/) or Windows (RW-Everything).

HD3000 High Resolution: https://github.com/RehabMan/Laptop-DSDT-Patch
Apply:
"HD3000 High Resolution"

Place at /Extra/dsdt.aml after creating your USB. And for your final install.

Also, you will need to use cpus=1 to avoid Local APIC panic. Eventually, you'll want to install the KernelPatcher module from Chameleon (Chameleon Wizard) to allow booting without cpus=1.

keep getting only underlined backslash on blackscreen. think it could be my usb drive or dsdt file?

What do you mean by "underlined backslash"? Are you reaching the bootloader? Your question makes me think you're not getting to the bootloader, but then you ask whether it could by your "dsdt file" which doesn't get involved until you reach the bootloader and attempt to boot the OS.

not getting to bootloader so i think i should go ahead and remake the usb installer

And make sure you don't have any extra external devices connected to your computer.

Sometimes you have to wipe out your existing data on your HDD before beginning. I'm not sure what is on the HDD that causes trouble, but it has come up a few times recently.

ok so i wiped my hard drive and i can now get to the bootloader. i can get to the apple screen and get the status bar to start moving using cpus=1 but it stops about a third of the way and just shows a grey prohibited sign. i have my dsdt.aml file in the extras folder not sure what else i am missing. just wanted to note this is my first time trying anything like this. i also tried cpus=1 with -x and it still did not make it any farther.

Please provide complete details in your profile/signature
(Profile/Settings link in upper right corner of this site)

System: manufacturer/model
CPU: detailed CPU model + motherboard chipset
Graphics: all graphics devices + laptop internal screen resolution

For example, typical Ivy laptop:
System: HP ProBook 4540s
CPU: i5-3320m/HM76
Graphics: HD4000, 1366x768

Use CPU-Z on Windows to find CPU (Core iX-xxx) and motherboard chipset (HMxx), and graphics capabilities. For a laptop, these details are important and affect critical installation procedures.

k should have everything updated in my profile that you should need. thanks for your help
