Wait for Kaby Lake chips or go with Core i7-6700K

Remember when Skylake came out and there were problems with games freezing? Or the wafers cracking? It's why I went with a last gen chipset and CPU. And it's also why I went with a Noctua heatsink. I tend to think that a lot of the Skylake sleep problems was because of the non-Haswell PSUs, but that notion has been proven wrong on this site since most guys here know to only use Haswell certified PSUs.

Makes me think that there will be birthing pains with Kaby, too, and if there isn't then I expect Kaby to be a fixed Skylake, in which case, why bother with Skylake?

Kaby Lake is going to be not much more than an "optimization" of the current Skylake chips. They will use the same 14 nm process. The I7-7700K will have a base clock of 3.6GHz or .4GHz slower than the current I7-6700K. Both have turbo up to 4.2 GHz. The 7700K will be slightly more efficient and perform slightly better. So there's really no reason to wait for Kaby lake to come out in 2017. Build now with Skylake if you need a new system. If you can wait a good amount of time, Cannon lake would be the way to go.

Won't the native USB-C be worth waiting for? I use Thunderbolt on my current MBP and love it. I'd hate to go back to Firewire 800 or USB. Thanks!

I think I will wait to build my Mac Pro Hackintosh and maybe build a mac mini version until Kaby ships. Thanks for your help.

That's the big question. I probably is if you can stand to wait it out, but as kiiroaka points out, the waiting time could be even longer than just Kaby Lake being released, but "birthing pains . . . " Making me rethink my own waiting.

By the time you are done waiting out the growing pains of Kaby Lake, Cannonlake will be around the corner.

Some interesting info... No more W7 licenses sold after October 2016, W7 not supported on Kaby, MS will not produce hardware with newest gen CPUS. I see two problems right away - MS hardware division will be fighting MS software division and Enterprise moving to another OS. It may be time to buy Chrome stock. MS isn't making a case for W10, not being able to turn off MS ads, privacy concerns, updates bricking systems, small businesses losing money when their software gets broken because of an update, etc.

Enterprise will keep using W7 just as it has continued to use WXP and W98 - all that will happen is that they will be segregated from internet access, but their core software will continue to run, even if it is limited to their intranets. The really big boys will probably start switching back to Linux Enterprise, SuSE, RedHat, et. al. All the big businesses that were hack were using Window servers and allowing access through AC maintenance ports, etc., afaik.

Your ability to use Windows 7 and 8.1 on your existing machine depends on what kind of processor you’ve got. If your computer isn’t cutting edge, you’re probably fine. But if you’re using Intel’s latest-and-greatest Skylake processors, Microsoft is determined to strong-arm you into upgrading.

Although Windows 7 will continue to receive updates until 2020, and Windows 8 until 2023, and in spite of the fact that these versions of Windows run quite happily on Skylake processors, Microsoft is discontinuing support for these versions of Windows (W7,W8) on Skylake on July 17, 2017. That’s about eighteen months away.

That right there is reason enough NOT to build a Skylake system, specifically a reason for Enterprise not to buy into Skylake. Enterprise knows that W7 will continue to be supported for another 4 years, so why bother with Skylake, now? Just keep throwing more and more memory upgrades at their present systems, keep updating to more and more powerful video cards, keep upgrading to the fastest possible CPUs.
It's the gamers that drive bleeding edge technology and they will continue to buy discrete video cards, 4K monitors, fast processors, fast RAM, etc. The gamers are probably already on board with W10 since it runs DX12 for games, but MS may have just plunged a knife into the workstation video card business - the vid card manufacturers, and the software publishers who support those cards.

We here are into OSX, but those who are security minded [edit: and who only use Windows] will probably switch over to Linux and will probably have W10 running just for gaming.

So what's the end result? http://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyl...7-and-8-1-intel-skylake-support/#f0c8f57781d4 Skylake will be extended to the same period as Haswell (2020/2023) and W7/8 on Haswell will no longer be supported with regular security updates after July 2017.

And I'll still be on Linux and hopefully OSX.

What's wrong with OS X security? Since OS X's release in 2001, there has been no viruses for it in the wild.

Absolutely nothing, afaik. Well, other than having to enable the firewall. But one has to do that with Linux, too. But that's better than having Admin rights enabled from the "get-go" on Windows XP/7/8 Home editions. (I don't know if W10H enables Admin rights as a default to new users.)

Apple taking a firm stance against the G forces who demand a back door to their iPhones only endeared themselves to those who value privacy and security. I was speaking of those who do only Windows, that they will probably move on to Linux, instead. If W7 is perceived as the securest OS of the MS bunch, and if W7 will no longer be supported with security updates, then one only has one other option - Linux. Or buy a MAC.

When it comes to Apple, they gave up on the PPC, then they gave up on the 32-bit Intel chips (XEONs, too). Sierra is giving up on a lot of older machines (RAM limited?) There are those who are stuck on older OSX releases, and someday we El Cap users will also be left out in the cold. So, it wouldn't surprise me if they came out and said that they're skipping Skylake, too.

Since Skylake only seems to have lasted a year (introduced a year ago), does that mean that we can expect a new architecture once a year? Or is it just the CPU? If you can rip out your i7-6700K and then install a Kaby CPU without having to buy a new mobo, then it won't be too bad. But if it's a new architecture then that probably means a new mobo.
