This is a dumb question that I should know the answer to but cannot seem to get a definitive answer.

I have a spare two port USB 3.0 card. Its one of these:

I have no obvious spare slots that exactly fit this card in my Gigabyte Z97X motherboard, but I do have this long slot labelled PCIEX4. Its the left most slot in this picture

I cannot use the short slot labelled PCIEXI_2, the short slot 3 slots in from the right as I have dual 280X cards in the slots PCIEX16 and PCIEX8 and I have an existing two port USB card in PCIEX1_1.

So can a short stubby PCIE card work in the long slot PCIEX4? I have to confess to reading lots and being very confused :banghead:

Thanks in advance,

Rob

You can use a PCIeX1 card, such as the USB 3.0 card you're considering, in any PCIe slot regardless of its length. That's part of the PCIe spec.

Thanks for the prompt and quick reply.

Rob

Just to report and confirm back that my new four port USB card arrived from China yesterday. Installed into the long slot and worked OOTB and does exactly what its supposed to.

Thanks again,

Rob
