If you've been counting the days until we don't have to use spinning platter hard drives for large size disks, the wait is almost over. Yesterday, Intel and Micron announced the availability of new 3D NAND flash technology, which will boost sizes of 2.5" Solid State drives to as large as 10 terabytes.

This new 3D NAND technology, which was jointly developed by Intel and Micron, stacks layers of data storage cells vertically with extraordinary precision to create storage devices with three times higher capacity than competing NAND technologies. This enables more storage in a smaller space, bringing significant cost savings, low power usage and high performance to a range of mobile consumer devices as well as the most demanding enterprise deployments.

Consumer products containing the new flash storage are now being tested, with retail availability sometime in the next year.

I wonder if we'll see a shift to NVMExpress since SATA Express seems to be lagging behind. Would love to see a drive controller than can take full advantage of the 10Gbps link of SATA Express, since we now have an External Bus that's faster than our internal storage bus...

At last!! Hopefully it also won't be too long before it's affordable.

Maybe soon we'll see a MacPro with a sensible drive option. Then all we need is a pair of gaming GPUs in it and Apple may finally have a killer gaming rig. Sadly it would still need a dual boot but I'd still be all over it.

I'd doubt it being affordable :/ SSDs are pretty cheap now, but before it used to cost a pretty penny for even a 240 or 120 gig one.

If they can reduce the price of 3D NAND flash enough, to something like 10-15 cents
per GB, it will bring about massive changes in the non-volatile memory (NVM) industry.
This means that pretty soon they'll be almost giving away the 1-3 TB platter drives
because many of the huge servers in data centers will switch to these new 3D NAND NVM
drives that are more efficient, use less energy and produce less heat. For servers that
use a lot of electricity 24/7 for daily operation and cooling, this will result in significant
reductions in their cost of operation. It's a similar situation to when LCD monitors came
down in price to be competitive with the older CRT ones. Everyone switched to the
superior more efficient technology that used fewer resources and created less E waste.

These SSDs will also have a much lower failure rate than the platter HDDs.
Another reason why they'll soon replace the mechanical drives.

This is really great news imo.

The 256Gb MLC version of 3D NAND is sampling with select partners today, and the 384Gb TLC design will be sampling later this spring. The fab production line has already begun initial runs, and both devices will be in full production by the fourth quarter of this year.

Obviously consumers won't be buying 10 TB SSDs any time soon as they will still be too expensive in comparison to mechanical platter drives. The buyers of those will likely be large data centers where
they will replace the platter drives eventually when the prices come down.
