Hey all, new here and to the hackintosh world. For last 6-7 years I have been using macbook pros, but till recent I started editing 4K video. Nothing in the macbook list really fit what I wanted lcd and video card wise so I ended up going alienware just because the specs and the UHD lcd were awesome for the price. I cannot really afford to drop 1500.00 on Adobe CS6 so i was planning on using FCP again if I got this laptop up and going with OSX. I looked around, but didnt see much for laptops, so I was hoping that someone could shed some light on if my machine is ok getting this up and going. Here are my specs.

Core i7 4710HQ 2.5 4th gen, 980m Nvidia 4gb, Windows 8.1, 256 SSD and1 TB 5400 drive, 16GB DDR3 1600 Ram, and UHD LCD.

Thanks for the help!

I have just ordered an Alienware 15....similar specs except with a 970M. The build will be very similar as the Nvidia drivers support both cards. I am planning to try a build ina couple of weeks when I'm on holidays. Will let you knew how I go.

Thanks! Please do let me know how it goes. i am almost to the point of just trading this for an iMac 5k, but I will remain patient a while longer ;)

The specs of the Alienware does not even beat a $800 Desktop build PC, how is that gonna help you with 4K when most Desktops could barely do 4K editing.

That Core i7 4710HQ not even faster than a Core i7 2600K CPU from 5 years ago in CPU performance.

Not dumping on the Alienware but I think if you want a solid 4k editing machine for $1500 you can do better on a desktop and not get inferior performance on a laptop that barely can keep up with older gen Core i7 desktop CPU.

The Nvidia 980m performs about 60% of a desktop GTX 680 which puts it near a GTX 660 in performance. That's not that fast at all.

Would the kind souls who have the Alienware 15 post the exact model and their experience in this thread?

I couldn't find in Google if they use Optimus or not.

Thank you in advance.

Check output of 'lspci -nn' in Linux. If you see both Intel graphics and Nvidia, it is likely Optimus.

There are laptops that have the two graphics devices independent (Intel on internal screen, Nvidia on HDMI), but they are rare. You can check in Windows by looking at display properties with an external monitor plugged into HDMI.
