Just a general question about reported SSD life. About a month or so ago I replaced my two year old 240GB Mushkin Chronos Deluxe SSD with a Samsung 840 EVO 500GB. Up until the day it was swapped out, HWMonitor was reporting the Mushkin had 100% SSD life. And it still does as it's now in my son's laptop (with Cindori's Trim Enabler). The Samsung on the other hand is now reporting 99% after a month of use. Is this normal, will it continue to lose life at this 1%/per month rate?

FWIW I also have a 120GB Kingston HyperX SSD that I've been using as a scratch drive for about 18 months. That reports SSD life still at 100%.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Cheers and thanks,
Lewis

I may be wrong about this, but it is my belief that most SSD manufacturers hard code the SSD remaining life at 100% - they get a lot of leeway in how the SMART codes are interpreted, and since today's SSDs are very likely to outlast whatever hardware they're installed in, there's practically no limit on their lifespan. I know for sure that some manufacturers hard code the SSD temperature -- if they'll do it for one SMART metric, it seems to follow that they'll do it for others.
