I've been given a core i5 2500k is it worth buying a motherboard and running OS X on or not? I've been looking at the GA-H61N-USB3 there is a DSDT on the DSDT section in downloads any ideas?

I'm still running my Intel DH67GD with i7-2600k and am very happy with the performance and reliability. My rule for desktop upgrades is no upgrade until hardware failure or until the performance of the CPU in the same price range ($300-$325) is double what I currently have (as measured by passmark CPU benchmark). So far Intel isn't there yet, so I keep what I have.

I'm going to buy the H61N-USB3 Gigabyte motherboard and put the core i5 2500k CPU in I'm not gunna waste the chip its a quad core also unlocked so might aswel use it

It depends on i) what the 2500K is going for at the moment, ii) what the mobo is going to cost you, and iii) what a comparable system with modern components will run you.

Depending on your uses (and sell/buy values), it might be better to sell the CPU and get a 2600K/2700K for the hyperthreading these i7 CPUs provide over the i5.

Intel has made huge gains in performance/watt, but not so much on raw performance... for 5+ years!

So yes, it's still worth it from an absolute perspective as long as you can get the components you need for the build for cheap.

One enduring advantage of sandy is that it is the most recent version that is known to be able to play iTunes drm protected content. Ivy and Haswell sadly cannot.

yeah thats why I'm thinking of keeping the i5 2500k and buy the GA-H61N-USB3 due to movies on my 47inch tv in the living room watch movies in iTunes also music and movies what I'm going to use it for really

also its not that expensive in the UK neither also in download DSDT theres a DSDT for this motherboard so i know it will work
