Hi,

Has anybody else managed to install El Capitan on this board successfully? I've managed to install with nvidia drivers however none of my USB ports are working, even mouse/keyboard etc. I've noticed threads about fixing USB 3 but I haven't seen anyone else have none of the USB ports working. Are there any essential kexts I might have missed?

I have turned off USB 3 support in the BIOS but surely this wouldn't turn off all the USB 2 ports?

Thanks.

Did you have the mouse & keyboard working all along and they suddenly stopped? (If so, after you put in a DSDT or something?) I assume they must have worked for a while for you to get through the install and the Nvidia drivers and so on. So I'm wondering if there's some change that caused them to stop working.

Hi,

They worked in bios and in clover boot screen. I had a yosemite clover install set up which usb ports worked fine, then I did a direct update to el capitan. I don't think there were any installer options in el capitan, maybe to select the disk, but yes it all worked until it finished the install and reached the desktop. I haven't put in any DSDT or changed any of the clover config settings since yosemite.

Very strange, might experiment with a few different smbios?

I did however have to delete some of the kexts from yosemite to get it to boot into el capitan. Could this be potentially why? It was the Kexts from the Clover Basics and Switching Advice

Best case might be to put the keyboard and mouse on an external USB hub -- sometimes that "just works".

A different SMBIOS might help if El Capitan has wonky USB rules for one you have. And if you have a DSDT in EFI/CLOVER/ACPI/patched/ you might want to move it away and try booting without it, since sometimes the DSDT changes the USB controllers in a way that causes them to run afoul of those wonky USB rules whereas naturally they might not. If you make changes like those, be prepared to test your mouse and keyboard on all ports on the machine.

Regardless, you could probably construct a DSDT to avoid that kind of stuff, but without a mouse you'd have to do it all from a different machine.

Cool thanks for the advice. I don't have a DSDT, I'll look into constructing one for USB, I can screenshare in to my OS. Otherwise I was thinking a PCIE USB card could be a solution? I'm not sure how the El Capitan USB controllers work but could using a PCIE card be a possible temporary solution?

Thanks

Yes, you can use a PCIe USB controller. Somewhere in this forum there's a list of USB3 cards that work out of the box. If you already have one, hopefully it will work with El Capitan; it's certainly worth a try but at least one person reported theirs caused a kernel panic I think.

No luck on the PCIE card front. I get this in verbose and then it boots up but no control from the usb ports. The mouse and keyboard get power but no signal. Might try a hub but thinking back to yosemite/crimea for now.

I've read everything I can get my hands on... I've used every boot flag combination I can find (including the ones above), and I have had no success even getting booted into the El Capitan installer. I have a really great Clover installation of Yosemite on my system, but whether upgrading or fresh installing I have not been able to get my x79 board to play nice and even get me into the installation screen.

My board is: ga-x79-up4
My graphics card: Nvidia gtx 670

I'm wondering if the X79 boards really are just not supported. Is there ANY help or advice (or guides) out there with anyone who is using this board that could tell me what I'm missing? I have been doing this long enough that I know I'm missing something small, I just don't know what it could be...

I would be happy to spell out everything I've tried, but since they all haven't worked, it seems like it would be a better route to hear from someone who knows what's up...
