Thunderbolt Compatible Case for Dual Boot

Ok, I had a successfully working dual boot build a few years ago and since then someone gave me this awesome thunderbolt monitor. Now I want to build a machine using that thunderbolt monitor that dual boots mac and linux.

Buying Advice I Need:
- Compatible motherboard
- Compatible case with a thunderbolt display port(s)
- A Hard Drive

I was going to use the following parts with it, but if there is a compatibility issue or something then I will replace them:
-
HIS H577FK1GD Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB 128-bitGDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX SupportVideo Card w/ Eyefinity (Video Card)
- OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600(PC3 12800) Low Voltage Desktop Memory ModelOCZ3G1600LV6GK (RAM)
- Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MBL3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Desktop ProcessorBX80601930
- Antec CP-850 850W Continuous Power CPX SLI CertifiedCrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC"compatible with Core i7" Power Supply (Power Supply)

AFAIK, you need a mainboard with TB output ports to run a TB display and the best you can get is the graphics output from the CPU - there is currently no way to get the discrete GPU to output thru the TB port on the mainboard. PCIe TB cards are data only last I heard.

Note this info is some months old - it may have changed if the new PCIe TB cards can output directly to a TB display. You will need to do some research on this to be sure.

hmmm, that is bad news @GoingBald.. this display is so big and nice..

oh I have an idea:
ill just get an adapter from Thunderbold to another kind of display so I can use the monitor I have.

Can you reccomend an adapter that will let me plug a thunderbolt display in and output another kind of display? along with ther motherboard, the case and the hard drive? Thanks

There several options. There are motherboards that support a displayport input to a thunderbolt output (I use an Asrock z87 Extreme 9/AC that allows me to take the signal from my graphics card and pass it on to an Apple thunderbolt monitor).

There are also motherboards that support the use of a thunderbolt add in card (Asus and Gigabyte both make these)

Both of these options utilize a displayport input that connects to your graphics card displayport output. You then connect your thunderbolt monitor to the thunderbolt output.

There are no direct displayport to thunderbolt adaptors. If you have an Apple thunderbolt monitor, it will only work with a thunderbolt connection.

@cdrhoek or anyone who knows

So you are saying that an Asrock z87 mobo will give out a signal that can be shown with a thunderbolt display? I don't care if the camera and speakers work, I am just concerned with the picture showing up.

wow. Newegg is out of Asrock z87 mobos. Can you send me a link to a mobo on newegg that will display on a thunderbolt display and is in stock?

thx
