The most stable long term machine I have ever used was... a NeXTcube. But after that, it is the 2009 Mac Pro with ECC RAM, which I'm using now. The current Mac Pro (late 2013) also uses ECC.

I realize that memory errors aren't frequent, but they aren't absent either. See "Google finds memory failures are much more common than expected" at:http://www.cnet.com/news/google-computer-memory-flakier-than-expected/

I notice there is no ECC in the Buyer's Guide and very little discussion of it in the forums. Though I found at least one success story:

Could the new Xeon E5 v3 be the way to go?

Maybe the Xeon E5-1650 v3 Haswell-EP 3.5GHz 6 Core? If I go this route, any recommended motherboards?

Or am I in for too much pain? My goal is a fully working system that I can use all day for work.

The problem with ECC RAM is finding a non-server mainboard that supports ECC RAM. Most do not, so look at the board specs very carefully - if it does not specifically state that the board has support for ECC modules, then do not put ECC RAM in that board.

Thanks. I did some more poking around and found this:

In a Sep 2014 press release, Gigabyte described their new motherboards for the E5-2600/1600 v3 with the one below being labeled as the workstation version (the others are for servers and look to be E-ATX sized).

So then the chip:

And the RAM x 2:
Kingston 16gb ddr4 2133 ecc cas 15 (1x16gb)

And have you also poked around to see if OS X will run on the 612 series PCH?

Last I heard it would not.

You have to look at the whole picture, not just part of it.
