Hi,

I'm planning on building my first CustoMac from some new and some old parts.
The machine will be used for web-development. I mostly use ; IntelliJ IDEA, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator and Windows VM on VMWareFusion or VirtualBox to test browser compatibility.
I intend to combine the following components:

NEW
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H
CPU: Intel Core i5 4570 Boxed
CPU-Cooler: Scythe Mugen 4 PCGH Edition
Crucial Ballistix Tactical BLT2C4G3D1608ET3LX0CEU (2x4GB)
Wireless: TP-Link TL-WDN4800
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Pearl Black

OLD
PSU: be quiet! Pure Power L7 300W
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
eSATA docking station: Sharkoon QuickPort Combo eSATA

Would this suffice and work (easily).

Looks good. Upgrade to 2 x 8GB of ram if you can. For VMs and Photoshop the more ram the better. Remember that you will be sharing about 1Gb of ram when running the HD4600 onboard gfx.
Also if you can afford a higher wattage PSU in the 400-500w range that would be advised but its not absolutely necessary now. If you add a good gfx card later on it will be.

Thanks for pointing out the 1GB shared memory for the graphics card. Do you know if there are any known issues with a 4x4GB configuration.
Replacing the PSU will be the first thing I'll do if the system is unstable.

Nope. Not anymore at least (with Mavericks).

Today I'm typing this message on my CustoMac, that I called The Beast ;) as the Fractal case is slightly larger than I expected. No problems there though.

Configuration:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H
CPU: Intel Core i5 4570 Boxed
CPU-Cooler: Scythe Mugen 4 PCGH Edition
Crucial Ballistix Tactical BLT2C4G3D1608ET3LX0CEU (2x4GB)
Wireless: TP-Link TL-WDN4800
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Pearl Black
PSU: be quiet! Straight Power E9 480W CM (followed trs96's advice)
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB (OS and applications)
SSD: Samsung 830 128GB (TimeMachine and Virtual Machines)
eSATA docking station: Sharkoon QuickPort Combo eSATA

The configuration is very silent.
I installed 10.9.2 with Clover bootloader using the TonyMacx86 guide and the Standard config.plist.
Everything worked out of the box, except audio. I adjusted several entries in the config.plist just for convenience.
I used PikerAlpha's
AppleHDA8Series.sh script to enable audio and am able to use analog channels (I can't check the S/PDIF). However, I would like to enable HDMI audio across my HD4600 internal graphics card, but have a hard time doing this, as I'm not sure which method to follow and whether I should use DSDT or SSDT or non at all.

Now that your build is complete except for HDMI audio it is time for you to open a thread in http://www.tonymacx86.com/hdmi-audio/ forum

First build for web-development [Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H, Intel i5-4570]

I managed to enable HDMI audio over Intel HD4600 and 'regular' outputs over Realtek ALC898. As I had a hard time I decided to write a guide for my configuration:

Configuration (also see post #5)
Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H BIOS version F9
Intel i5-4570 with integrated Intel HD4600 Graphics

Requirements
UEFI install (Non-SSDT, Non-DSDT) according to tonymacx86 Clover Guide using 'config.plist-Standard.zip'
OS X Mavericks 10.9.2
Bootloader: Clover v2652

Downloads
MultiBeast - Mavericks 6.2.1 - http://www.tonymacx86.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=219
DPCIManager - http://sourceforge.net/projects/dpcimanager/

Framebuffers patch Option C - https://github.com/toleda/graphics_...aphics_intel_hd5k-azul-c-90_patch.command.zip Press ‘View Raw’ to download
EFI Mounter (optional) http://www.tonymacx86.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=207

Getting started
0. Your Downloads folder should contain the following files (I downloaded them to a separate folder)
Pre-Unzip Downloads folder.png
a. Extract all .zip files
b. After successful extraction remove all .zip files
0. Your Downloads folder should now contain the following files
Post-Unzip Downloads folder.png

1. Prepare your Clover ‘config.plist’
a. Mount EFI partition (it might already be mounted)
b. Goto EFI -> Clover
c. Open ‘config.plist’ with TextEdit

  • Goto <key>Devices</key>
  • remove
PHP:
<key>Audio</key>
<dict><key>Inject</key>
<string>1</string></dict>
d. Save config.plist

2. Installation of the “regular” Realtek ALC898:
a. Open ‘MultiBeast - Mavericks Edition’ folder
b. Select ‘MultiBeast’ and Show Package Contents
c. Goto Contents -> Resources
d. Select ‘AppleHDA-898.pkg’ and copy the file to your Downloads folder
e. Double click ‘AppleHDA-898.pkg’: Continue -> Install -> Enter password -> Install Software -> Close
f. Restart

3. Patch AppleHDA using Toleda’s Audio HDMI 8 Series
a. Double click ‘audio_hdmi_hd5K-hda-90_patch.command’ in your Downloads folder
b. Enter password
c. Restart

4. Patch Framebuffer using Toleda’s Graphics Intel Framebuffers
a. Double click ‘graphics_intel_hd5k-azul-c-90_patch.command’ in your Downloads folder
b. Enter password
c. Restart

5. Installation of the SSDT
a. Open ‘audio_ssdt-hdmi-ami_hd5k-amd-nvidia-1_v2’ folder
b. Rename ‘SSDT-1.aml’ to ‘SSDT-1’
c. Mount EFI partition (it might already be mounted)
d. Copy ‘SSDT.aml’ to EFI -> Clover -> ACPI -> patched
SSDT.aml location.png
e. Goto EFI -> Clover
f. Open ‘config.plist’ with TextEdit

  • Goto <key>SSDT</key>
  • change
PHP:
<key>DropOem</key>
<false/>

  • to
PHP:
<key>DropOem</key>
<true/>

  • this enables SSDT
g. Save config.plist
h. Open ‘DPCIManager_ML’ folder in your Downloads folder
i. Double click ‘DPCIManager’
Pre-Rebuild cache.png
j. Press ‘Rebuild Cache’ a Log window will appear and wait for it to finish; this might take some time
