Hi guys,

Recently I've build a new Hackintosh for myself and used a Gigabyte GA-Z68P-DS3 (rev. 2.1) motherboard for it. Everything is basically OK except for the audio part. The original 1.0 revision of the Gigabyte GA-Z68P-DS3 used Realtek ALC889, but the later revisions don't specify what audio they use. As most of the Z68-based motherboards use the same ALC889, I assume my Gigabyte GA-Z68P-DS3 (rev. 2.1) also continues to use it.

I personally use MultiBeast to install OS X 10.7.3 Lion from the Mac App Store and a pre-edited DSDT form Tonymac's DSDT database, so to enabling sound for ALC889 should be easy, but... Even if check the "ALC8xxHDA", "AppleHDA Rollback", "ALC889" (from the "Non-DSDT HDAEnabler") or any combination of them I still don't get any trace of sound. The system profiler shows audio devices, but there are none of sound input or output devices in the "Sound" section of System Preferences.

Any help?

UPDATE: It seems that my motherboard actually has a "Realtek ALC887-VD" sound card, at least that's what the Terminal in Linux said.

Delete ONLY the audio kexts inside /System/Library/Extensions folder and run these MB settings. They are ALC8xxHDA.kext and HDAEnabler.

You chose the audio option for those who do not use a DSDT.

Re: No sound on Gigabyte GA-Z68P-DS3 (rev. 2.1), ALC889(?)

OK, let me check a few things:

- Does the order of these things (like installing kexts) affect the outcome?
- If I install a kext thru MultiBeast, is checking the "System Utilities" mandatory?

After the initial install of the system (with UserDSDT), at first I checked only the "ALC8xxHDA.kext" (without checking system utilities) - got no sound. I thought that maybe my DSDT didn't have audio edits, so I ran MultiBeast and checked "ALC889" from "HDAEnabler" - still no sound. After that, I installed "AppleHDA Rollback" - still no sound.

After all that, I think I tried every possible combination of them (deleting "ALC8xxHDA.kext" and "HDAEnabler" from S/L/E by hand, if required):

- just "ALC8xxHDA.kext";
- just "AppleHDA Rollback";
- "ALC8xxHDA.kext" + "HDAEnabler";
- "ALC8xxHDA.kext" + "AppleHDA Rollback";
- "AppleHDA Rollback" + "HDAEnabler";

The last attempts I also checked "System Utilities", but still can't get any devices in sound input or output to show up.

Yup, still no sound :eek: . Tried idd's guide with his kext (followed it exactly), but still no sound.

Maybe something's wrong because of the iMac12,2 Model Identifier or something similar? Maybe I should just try to use VoodooHDA or make a custom binary patch for the vanilla AppleHDA.kext?

Re: No sound on Gigabyte GA-Z68P-DS3 (rev. 2.1), ALC889(?)

Holy sh*t... I booted up Linux and looked up the Sound Card in the Terminal - it says that it's a "Realtek ALC887-VD" and not ALC889. If it true, than it's back to square one.

Re: No sound on Gigabyte GA-Z68P-DS3 (rev. 2.1), ALC889(?)

Well... the "ALC8xxHDA" + "ALC887" (from the "Non-DSDT HDAEnabler") combo didn't work. As always, I see the sound card in the System Profiler, but no input or output devices in System Preferences.

Progress at last. So, after failing every ALC889 kext and guide I could find and discovering that the bozos at Gigabyte probably installed a "Realtek ALC887-VD" sound card in my motherboard, I tried some more different guides, this time focusing on ALC887.

Even the "VoodooHDA-2.7.3" driver couldn't get any progress, but eventually I stumbled upon this kext. I followed the guide (install the "ALC887HDA.kext" with Kext Utility, than use MultiBeast to install "AppleHDA Rollback" and "Non-DSDT HDA Enabler for ALC887/888b", without selecting ALC8xxHDA) and voila - I finally got sound.

There are four "line-out" ports and one "headphones" port in the "Output" section of System Preferences as well as one "internal microphone" and one "line-in" ports in the "Input" section.

Currently only one port works good enough: one of the ports at the back of the PC produces normal sound; the front panel port get somewhat distorted sound. No microphone or line-in ports (both back and front) seem to work.

Some more feedback...

ALC887 - VD2 OS X Lion + DSDT package by 7ender also seems to work. After modifying my DSDT (the HDEF part) according to the manual and installing the patched AppleHDA.kext as the only audio solution (no HDAEnbalers, no AppleHDA Rollback, etc), I get sound, both input and output.

The Output section of System Preferences has:

- Internal Speakers (this device works when plugged-in at the back of the PC);
- Line Out;
- Line Out;
- Digital Out;

While the Input section of System Preferences has:

- Internal microphone (this device works when plugged-in at the back of the PC);
- Line In;

No trace of working front panel ports, but still better than the last option, since the microphone is working. System Profilers on the other hand shows too many ports, lol.

Maybe you can recommend some good guide on how to manually patch AppleHDA.kext, mess around with layout.xml and platform.xml files and edit the audio portion of DSDT? I'll try to get everything working.

You would have to check out the Audio/DSDT section of the forum for audio edits from toleda.
