Compact power supplies are not that easy to find, especially not if you’re looking for something that can deliver a decent amount of power as well. SilverStone has been one of the few companies offering SFX form factor that are capable of delivering 450W of power and now the company has launched a modular model of its tiny, yet powerful PSU.

The model in question is known as the ST45SF-G where the G doesn’t stand for modular, but rather for the 80 Plus Gold certification that the PSU carries. This means that this is a highly efficient PSU and that it wastes very little power in the conversion from AC to DC. It has a single +12V rail which delivers up to 37A which means that it can nearly top out its rating on the 12V rail alone.

The ST45SF-G measures a mere 125x63.5x100mm and SilverStone provides a bracket to make it fit in standard ATX cases. Being fully modular, the ST45SF-G should be suitable for all but the smallest mini-ITX systems and despite its compact size it sports a standard 24-pin motherboard connector, a 4/8-pin 12V connector, one 8/6-pin graphics card connector, as well as a second 6-pin graphics card connector, three SATA connectors, two Molex connectors and a floppy type power connector.

The downside you ask? Well, the ST45SF-G doesn’t come cheap, its predecessor, the ST45SF which isn’t modular and carries 80 Plus Bronze certification is available for around $65 which is a lot for a 450W PSU, even in a compact form factor. The ST45SF-G is currently listed in Amazon for an insane $93.99 which is a lot of money to pay for a 450W PSU, but if you got the right – or should that be wrong – chassis, then this might be a life saver.

I've been looking to replace the PSU in my mATX case, but for $94 I think I'll pass for now.

the price is certainly high, and they know it. when you look at the field, there are major premiums on gold certified and even more so on fully modular psus. the $30 up from the bronze/semi modular sku does not appear out of the ordinary

This would mate perfectly with the ST03 mini case that I recently ordered. In fact, I've been waiting for this PSU to be released, but they just took too long so I've ordered the bronze, non-modular version of it. Once that thing arrives, I'll decide whether it's worth the upgrade or not. (Since I'm not cutting corners, I have a feeling I'll be upgrading.)
