X1 Carbon Gen. 6 with Catalina 10.15.6 installed and fully functional since years.
Bur suddenly I encounter this issue:
status bar shows 1% charging but never charged, it powers off if I detach AC power immediately.
(also I tried Apple genius 96W charger, and also under Windows from my dual OS installation)

----------------
As system report(left) shows only 132 cycles charged but full Charge Capacity = 143mAh!

I doubt the battery is dead, so my question asking your help/expertise:
  • Are there any authentic methods or App/Software under macOS/Windows to identify if dead?
  • Any software to reset battery status? i.e. does it related to NVRAM, PRAM, SMC?
  • If I detach internal battery and boot only with AC power, would that reset battery settings?
  • with regards to NVRAM, PRAM, SMC, how to charge the file(s) to reset battery status?
BTW: the installed kexts are listed in 3rd picture(R) and in EFI partition/.../other/, only 3 kexts, i.e. FakeSMC, VoodooPS2Controller, IntelMausiEthernet

Thanks in advance!

but your design capacity is at 2.9%

strange that it says the battery is good though

if you turn that laptop off and charge for a few hours, does the light go from orange to green/white? (depending on your setup?)
yes really strange.
I tried different charger/power socket or outlet, under macOS or Windows and different port TB3 on my X1C6, attached overnight, yet never changed from "orange" to "green", BTW: previously I had this issue but was able to charge to green though.

Would you suggest to detach internal battery for a reset?

you could try replacing fakesmc kext with virutalsmc kext, add with it smcbatterymanager.kext that comes with virtualsmc

you may also need ecenabler.kext if your battery icon doesn't show

What's the classic way to reset SMC for hachintosh, can I use clover configurator? or hackintool?
I tried Thinkpad native software ThinkVantage in windows to rest/calibrate, also no charging.
also I detached internal battery and boot only with AC power, both Win and macOS not reset, i.e. 1% no charging.

don't think you can reset the battery in anyway

you may have to purchase a new battery

had the same thing happen to me the other month, wouldn't charge over 1% no matter what I tried

Was yours also a thinkpad X1C ?

Yes! This is very strange to me.

Of all my experience with laptop/battery, this is the first time of battery on early dead! esp. for a thinkpad top series with only 132 charging cycles, ps: my lenovo ideapad with >300 cycles still 70% capacity.
What could be the reason (esp. to avoid this again?)
  • Would constantly connect to power be the issue?
  • kext misuse/mis-configurated?
  • Could Apple macOS bring in some damaging mechanism(like they did with IOS/iPhone:batterygate )?
  • Theoretically, how could it happen? write to battery EPROM to declare its death and block charging?

no, it was my Asus in my profile

keeping it connected to power is not really a good thing

do a few power drains and re charges

I had an issue where it wouldn't charge over 79%, left it off power and made sure it didn't sleep and ran the battery until the laptop turned off (stayed on at something like 4% for ages)

when it died, i charged it up while the laptop was off and after a few hours the charging light turned from orange to white, turned on laptop and was at 100% charge
