Hey everyone,

I just wanted to share a personal accomplishment of mine. I have read online all over the place and also on this forum that the 780 Ti and above (i.e Titans etc..) will not function with OS X due to the new Rev. B chip used in them. I am certainly not the first to have solved this problem but I think I could shine some light on the matter for those who are struggling. Note: the main purpose of the build is for 4K app development, gaming & video editing.

CPU: Intel 4770K @ 4.3 GHz (with Intel HD 4600)
GPUS: Dual EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Tis in SLI @ 1.25 GHz each
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87X-UD5H
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16 GB of 1866 MHz DDR3 Memory
Storage: 2X Kingston HyperX 3K 120 GB SSDs & 2X Seagate Barracuda 2Tb 7200 RPM mechanical drives

In terms of installation there are some steps you need to take before you get underway:

*N.B*: for this to work you need a OS X natively compatible GPU or integrated GPU in the CPU (e.g Intel HD 4600, what I used) for this to work, as well as the 780 Ti of course.**

When you first build your rig LEAVE OUT the 780 Ti(s), boot up the BIOS and make sure you are using IGFX (Integrated Graphics) and then boot off of your USB with UniBeast etc... the install went smoothly for me and once I had OS X up and running I went on and installed my mobo drivers etc. At this point DO NOT RESTART, you need to get the latest NVIDIA web drivers off of their site, stick 'em on a USB and install them to your Hackintosh, whilst still using the IGFX, note: make sure you have the Web Drivers set as default, then your computer will boot using them.

Then you need to install the 780 Ti(s) and then power your system back on, this is the clincher, you will need to go into your BIOS and select that your computer uses IGFX and 32M of max memory BUT your computer will actually not use the IGFX it will instead use the 780 Ti, this can be confirmed post startup both in the NVIDIA drivers pane and system information tab.

I also use the following boot flags on startup:

IGPEnabler=Yes GraphicsEnabler=No

These allow my computer to boot with no problems at all and run on the 780 Ti's (as I have 2 in SLI) with no problem at all.

Now, be warned YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY, this goes without saying but you may have a different rig and what works for me may not work for you, but this solved the problems of failed startups for me.

I have more info at the YouTube video I made of the rig fully operational and I give some more info as to how I did it there:

Hope this helped some of you out there, if you have any questions hit me up in the YouTube comments of that video as I don't check this forum very regularly, and I may be able to help!

Cheers, Pullerz :headbang:

I would like to ask what op system drivers did you download and install from the NVidia site, I am currently going from a 770 to a 780ti, although I do not have a chip with built in gpu I do have a card that I can boot from to get into osx. im just going to play with a a little bit and I would like to know what op system drivers you installed in osx from NVidia, thanks.

I have a 4790k with z97x-ud5h (both still in box) and considering single 780 TI to be used with 32" Asus PA328Q due out soon. Did you get your setup running at 60Hz?

i saw in your YouTube comments that you would have gotten this z97x version, in hindsight. Can you think of any issues that would cause in terms of 4k support? I see success builds with the z97x board but I also see that someone had to disable DP. I want 4k and broadwell future proofing.

Well, first of all, sorry for taking so long to get back to you- I was on holiday! In terms of the z97X I am unsure of any issues pertaining to it but I would assume that it should work fine. My setup does run perfectly at 60 Hz and the scaling built into OSX works perfectly as well. As far as the 780Ti goes, it's a great card but a bit of a headache to get working, someone commented on my YT video that my method to 'make it work' did work for them so I guess that if you followed the steps I took you may have some success, I can't guarantee it I'm afraid but I can imagine that with enough tweaking it should function, my DP works just fine so I'm not very familiar with this issue, I imagine it can probably be bypassed with a kext or driver! :)

You mentioned (in the video I think) that your 4k monitor is running at 60 Hz. Is that connected to the Display port on one of the graphics cards, the HDMI port or one of the dual DVI ports?

Hey Pullerz,

On your Youtube video you mention that this rig is for Video Editing. How is it running in that aspect? Are you using Premiere and are you able to play back in real time 4K? 5K? Have you used Davinci resolve at all?

Also I'm assuming the 780ti's are the 3GB ones?

Thanks!

Thank you for your response! It is holding up very well indeed, I use both Premiere, AE and FCP X and all run with no issues at all- they can playback high-bitrate realtime 4K with no problems (I haven't dealt with any 5K footage as of yet so I cannot comment on that I'm afraid) though the 4K is handled very well indeed. Im afraid I haven't had the occasion to use Davinci resolve as of yet however I may find use of it in the future as I progress- I'll be sure to let you know how I get on!

Cheers, Pullerz :)
