WireLurker Malware: What Countermeasures Have You Taken?

I'm interested in the consensus regarding OS X anti-virus and anti-malware utilities. When I got my first rig up and running I installed ClamXav because I was familiar with the Linux version.The fact that it available through the App Store gave me confidence.

Later I changed to the free AV client from Avast, largely do to my satisfaction with their Windows-based software. About a week ago I changed from Avast to the free client from Avira which is said to use superior detection heuristics and to have a smaller resources footprint than Avast.

Here's the key statement in that article: WireLurker was used to trojanize 467 OS X applications on the Maiyadi App Store, a third-party Mac application store in China.

So instead of installing anti-virus / malware software simply avoid downloading from places like Maiyadi.
Wirelurker is not going to be a problem in Apps from the Mac App Store.
