I would like to try OS X El Capitan but how do I get started making the usb image if I'm only running Windows 10 at the moment? I read the getting started guide and it seems to presume you have some OS X system already installed? I don't. I wanna follow the guide here. How can I get a copy of el Capitan because I don't know anybody with a Mac? Any ideas? The only OS I have running is Windows 10 or Linux? I also have an iPad.

If starting from scratch:

OS X Lion (10.7) is still available I believe:

Or even Snow Leopard OS X 10.6 DVD:

But support will be hard to find if you're going to install the older OS in newer hardware. Disregard some hardware issues, but as long as you can boot to the OS X and can connect to the internet, you can download El Capitan for free from the App Store. Then follow the latest instructions.

So if I purchase a dvd with osx on it I should be able to boot from my dvd/cd drive and install it. Is this correct? I can download a full Mountain Lion OSX dvd in .dmg format. How can I burn this to a dvd from within windows 10? Is their any windows dvd burning software that I can use to do it available?

Depends on your hardware. If your board/CPU are Broadwell or earlier there is an iBoot CD you can use to boot the SL retail DVD and install SL. Skylake or later hardware there is no iBoot and no current method to install SL.

The only DVD with OS X on it that is not an illegal distro is Snow Leopard that is manufactured by Apple and sold by them. So no, you cannot download a .dmg of Mt. Lion. That is in violation of site rules. You'll need to have a Mac, 2009 or newer and an Apple ID to download OS X from the MAS. You can still purchase Mt. Lion from there. http://www.apple.com/shop/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion you would then make a Unibeast installer with it. If you know someone with a functional CustoMac, you can also make a Unibeast installer with that.

I think I'll just buy a used iMac. I have $1,000 to spend so if anybody in Australia is selling one I would be interested. I guess a 5 year old iMac would be okay according to today's specs aye? It would have to run better then a hacked pc anyway I reckon. Had a browse around eBay and a few are going around that price. Thanks everyone for the help though.
