Windows 10 is Now Available

Today Microsoft launches Windows 10. You can 'reserve' your free copy via any computer running Windows 7, 8, or 8.1. This is the first time Microsoft has given away a free upgrade to a major version of Windows.

I ran the upgrade this morning on my spare little Toshiba laptop. Took about 2 hours with a USB ISO with an upgrade install, but it's a hard drive, not an SSD. It's honestly as easy as clicking a few times. I think it runs well, but I haven't used it a lot yet. Hesitant to put it on my desktop...

Was able to upgrade the Windows 8.1 partition on my HP ProBook 4530s laptop (OS X 10.10.4 and Windows 8.1 on same SSD) to Windows 10 Pro today. Amazingly, the Windows install did not break my Clover installation and both OSes are working fine.

Tried to upgrade the Windows drive in my Hackintosh (in other words, for this purpose, a standard Windows PC) from 8.1 to 10 last night. The install wouldn't even start; I got error 80246010 right away.

Then I tried to upgrade my MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013) from 8.1 to 10. It spent an hour getting to 48%, then a reboot gave me a "Windows could not start" message, and it restored me to Windows 8.1. Update History tells me it encountered error "Code C1900101".

I'll try again later, but I'm a bit disappointed so far.

I just installed Win 10 from the official iso from Microsoft and I have to say I'm really impressed
with the new Windows ! That redesigned square trash can is so much better than the old one.

Seriously though, it does look to be a major improvement on 8.1 and is something I'm considering
upgrading my Win 7 machine to. Good work Microsoft. There is still hope.

So far I have completed four upgrade installs and will likely do another two or three installs soon.

I went with the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool loaded on a USB stick. So far I’ve upgraded an Asus Eee EP121 Core i5 based Windows Tablet PC, HP Pavilion DV-7 laptop, HP Pavilion G7-1080nr laptop and a Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet (64GB version).

When creating a USB stick you must choose between versions of Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro. Furthermore, you must choose between 32bit, 64bit or both. There is probably a hack that lets you create a USB stick that has all versions of Windows 10 but there is no method to choose from easily by default. So if you are upgrading a mix of systems that are eligible for upgrade to Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro you’ll have to make two USB installers and label them correctly.

Overall its quite a nice improvement from Windows 8, 8.1 and 8.1 Update 1 IMO. Its even nice compared to Windows 7. My only gripe really is that Microsoft Windows Media Center is not carried over into Windows 10. This was already well known in advance. Still I’ll go on record in saying that I don’t believe Media Center would have been in any way incompatible with Windows 10 and it would have taken either no efferent to carrie it over into Windows 10 or very minimal effort.

Either way, I have two dedicated Media Center systems that I cannot upgrade to Windows 10 because of this omission. If some other software comes around that can do what Media Center can do in Windows 10 then maybe I’ll upgrade those two systems but I don’t think that will happen,....

Edit:

The Windows 10 upgrade seems to activate itself in the background without the need for a key so the user isn't nagged. That is a nice touch,....

Installed it on a spare drive I had lying around. So far so good. I never bothered with Win 8 so it's a bit of a change from Win 7 but I like what I see so far.

A word to the wise; make sure you do a custom setup otherwise you'll be sharing tons of info with MS and its partners.

If you do have to use a MS account for some reason make up a secondary account with
an Outlook or Hotmail email address that you won't use for anything else. i.e don't give
your everyday use Outlook or Hotmail email address as your MS account for logging in
to your Win 8 or 10 pc. Since MS is giving 10 away for free they use other ways to make
up for lost revenue. That's why they put carrots out in front of users (Cortana access &
downloads from the Windows store) only if you sign in with a MS account.

Here's how a MS forum moderator gave a scripted response to the Cortana usage issue.

"Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Cortana app comes in built for Windows 10 tech preview. In order to use Cortana, you need to sign in to your Microsoft account and Internet has to be turned on so that you can use Cortana app. You can't use Cortana in non Microsoft account."
