I entered my current parts list into a bottleneck calculator and it says a Sapphire Pulse RX 570 could be a bottleneck with my i7 8700k.

I was thinking of downgrading my CPU to a i5 8400 or i5 8600 to minimize the bottleneck or go with a i7 8700 now and possibly upgrade my graphics card ( or add a second identical one) down the line. Previous posts about dual GPUs make it seem possible. In the future is it likely there will still be support for a second graphics card?

MacOS supports dual cards but only for compute and only in some apps. For rendering video it’s great, for playing video games it is not. You lose pci lanes. One card gives you 16 pci lanes, 2 cards gives you 8 lanes per card so in OpenGL apps and gaming have reduced scores or performance. Your best solution is always the most powerful single card in MacOS.

If you plan on upgrading the card later I would go with a RX 560 for just over $100 it’s a great card. Just don’t get the XFX RX 460-560 model it’s the only one that has an incompatible bios. All RX 550 models are a no go as well.

The Mac Pro 2013 did ship with 2 graphics cards, so there is some support in MacOS for 2 graphics cards. Maybe also the upcoming 2019 Mac Pro. Otherwise no other Macs have 2 big GPUs. Is there any software you may use that can take advantage of more than 1 GPU?

No software I can think of. I'm a pretty average user (photoshop/occasional game/work), which is starting to make me think the i7 8700 is a bit overkill and the i5 8600 or 8400 to be the more logical choice.

Yes. I just installed the VGTab kext to fix the fan. Took about a minute to configure.

Very helpful! Thanks. I'm deciding between Sapphire Vega 64 vs MSI Vega 56 (cost difference of $75-$100). Knowing the MSI Vega 56 works with this utility was a deciding factor for me.

Hi Chef,
I've got the MSI Vega 56 air boost now. Nice card!
Can i ask -- are you using VGtab with Whatevergreen? Or did you use the manual method to install?

I'm getting the fan issue (running high constantly) and had some glitchy display issues with screen going black for split seconds using DP connectors 1 or 3. Seems like DP #2 connector works just fine. So strange.

But also i get the GPUtach red lights flashing all on all off repeatedly very fast non-stop. Is that happening on yours? Not sure what's going on there. It's very strange.

I use both the VGTab kext and WhateverGreen. I've been using both for months with no issues at all. I can't even hear the system when it's idling or under low load and the tower is only about 3ft away from my ear.

Try to see if another DisplayPort cable makes a difference. Without WhateverGreen, only the DisplayPort next to the HDMI port works for me. With WhateverGreen, all three DisplayPorts work.

I don't know about the LEDs on the video card. I can't see it. I don't have acrylic or glass side panels and the way the motherboard is situated in my case, the underside of the motherboard faces me.

It sounds like VGATab didn’t take or activate correctly. The lights should be normal and the fans should be running smooth. Also, check the small switch on the card and set to silent mode and not overclock mode.
