MKBHD doesn't think it's a sure thing, as most media outlets are reporting lately.

If Apple can make wireless charging faster and more efficient by 2024 they may ditch wired charging altogether. They would also need to reduce the size of the Magsafe "puck" so that it would be practical to take with you when away from home. USB-C would make it much more convenient for the iPhone owner that travels with their phone, tablet, laptop etc. What Apple doesn't like is that their customers would be much more likely to buy and use 3rd party USB-C cables that they will get no royalties from.

It will be interesting to see if they can pull this off and remove the charging port completely from the iPhone 16 in 2024 or the 17 a year later.

MKBHD fails to mention Article 13 of the new EU law.
With respect to charging by means other than wired charging, divergent solutions may be developed in the future, which may have negative impacts on interoperability, consumer convenience and the environment. Whilst it is premature to impose specific requirements on such solutions at this stage, the Commission should take action towards promoting and harmonising them to avoid future fragmentation of the internal market.
Even if Apple rebels against this and doesn't switch to USB-C that doesn't mean the law won't change in the future. I'm sure Apple lawyers are going over this to find all possible loopholes they can. IMO it would make the most sense and make things simpler for their customers, to switch to USB-C for every Mac, iPad Tablet and iPhones too.

I think the EU legislating on unified cable connectivity is just a pointless waste of time and money. What has the world come to? They might as well legislate that all ballpoint-pen refills are the same ...

Why not spend money legislating on something more worthwhile?

Good work if you can get it, but why not spend their funding on something more worthwhile?
Many much bigger problems in the world that need addressing at the moment. It's primarily a power struggle between the EU and the likes of Google and Apple. Each side wants to dominate the other and dictate the way things will be.

One thing Apple could do but probably won't. Tell the EU countries that they will no longer sell new iPhones there. I'm certain most of these legislators use iPhones on a daily basis. When they learn that they'll never be able to upgrade to the latest model, they might have second thoughts about this new law. They'd have to switch to Android or smuggle in new iPhones (at inflated prices) from other non-EU countries. Or Apple could make an EU edition of the phone that only has MagSafe charging and keep selling Lightning based phones everywhere else.

That's a good idea. Hypocrisy is something I'm not fond of.

And, I must be grumpy today, but wireless-only charging is another bad idea. Some of the big manufacturers have showcased massive wireless charging stations that cover a whole house. Just put a phone down and it charges. Crazy idea. Imagine the potential effects... I have friend with a pacemaker, for example. Might not be my charger, but next door's.

Here's what happened with laptop chargers back in the day. Every laptop manufacturer had a proprietary barrel plug for their brand of laptop. It would only work with the laptop it shipped with. This pic is from a "one fits all" charger description on Amazon. They claim it will work with any name brand laptop mentioned by using these adapters with a single charging brick.

Hope what I drew could be dumped into the history as soon as possible.

Personally I don't want to be compelled to use wireless charging only. I prefer charging by wires.

All by one iPad have USB-C and I would expect next year's iPhone to have USB-C instead of lightning.

I am planning to upgrade to an iPhone 13 from my XR (bought in 2019) in 2023. So it will still be lightning for me for another few years. My iPad Air 4 has USB-C.
