Following the guide to install with recovery Catalina USB from @Feartech here

Have got as far as booting from the USB and being ready to install. But an Internet connection is required to proceed.

Oddly I seem to have succeeded with itlwm.kext. A faked ethernet connection appears, but I can't use it until after installation when some software can be installed.

The ethernet adapter listed is the only one shown even if I use one of the ethernet kexts listed below.

With the itlwm.kext disabled using any of the kexts below shows 3 ethernet connections (the second and third being item2 and item3), but on connecting a cable there's no activity (negotiation) with the router and no data is shown as in the case of the wifi connection (image above)

RealtekRTL8111.kext
IntelMausi.kext
AtherosE2200Ethernet.kext
AppleIntelE1000e.kext

With the first 3 kexts all that is shown (whether or not ethernet cable is connected) is this:

With the fourth kext the mouse and keyboard don't work so I can't proceed.

Any ideas?

Let's concentrate on LAN for install

you need to find out what ethernet you have, most Asus have Realtek but checking in windows device manager can confirm

also there are different versions RealtekRTL8111.kext that newer versions won't work on older macOS versions

Also bear in mind itlwm.kext uses an ethernet connection rather than wireless, counter to what might be expected.

If no other ethernet drivers are present then "en0" will be the Intel wifi. If any
LAN adapters present are natively supported they might be installed first, so check system-report when you finally get to desktop and the ethernet adapter with a 192.168.x.x address will be the wireless.

I realised that when I checked the laptop specifications originally the ethernet cable was not plugged in and I simply forgot to unhide unused devices.

Having done that I now know that the ethernet device is AX88772B. I've found drivers for this for iOS versions to 10.15 and a separate package for later versions, but these are .dmg files that I guess can only be installed after the iOS itself is up and running.

No obvious kexts for this device so any help much appreciated :)

It's an Intel device inside the laptop, but connection is through a usb as there are no ethernet cable ports.

Device manager shows it as Intel AX88772B. Should have been clearer. Sorry

That model number shows-up as an ASIX brand and seems to be a USB to Ethernet adapter chip. Not, as far as I can see Intel.

ahh ok, the guide is only useful with laptops with a "real" LAN port on the laptop

you could try the intel wifi option, think you my need to edit the info.plist in the kext to add in your wifi information for it, not sure if this will work but worth testing

Edited the info.plist file to add SSIDs and passwords, and local IP was assigned. Seems I have internet after all :)

Catalina installing as I write
