I've got a monitor with vga input only so I was about to buy a zotac gt710 (40$) to install sierra when I stumbled upon this:

VGA is not supported in OS-X.
If you don't know with cheap ones feel free to recommend whatever card's vga input you know it's working.
you can use a vga - dvi adaptor if needs be

(i have an older geforce 405 thats works native on El Capitan, it may work on Sierra)

I got a GT 640 with a working VGA port under El Capitan don't know about any version above that as the machine can't be upgraded beyond that

DisplayPort to VGA adapters are the only safe bet, since they behave like a true DP device on their input.

Plain VGA connections (including passive DVI to VGA adapters) are not supported in OS X. They may work depending on your specifig GPU and OS X build (-> driver revision), but the software support can break anytime.
