This isn't exactly a problem, and I didn't discover this until I installed my xbox360 controller and tried to play Portal, but when I did those things in that order, Steam insisted that I go into big picture mode, which I did. It was in some strange resolution, so I when I went into the Preferences to change the resolution to 1080 and it complained that it might be a problem because I have 0mb of nvram. I went ahead anyway and Steam crashed.
So I reloaded Steam in whatever the opposite of big picture mode is, and Portal ran fine and there were no issues regarding it recognizing either my xbox360 controller or my GPU with it's 4gb of vram.
