Hello everyone,

I want to buy a new internal soundcard. for my windows side this is simple. For OS X i dont know if i can simply buy any old soundcard and install it or whether it has to be specifics.

I would like to buy an Asus Strix SOAR 7.1 PCI-E Sound Card but not if it will not work with my OS X partition.

Could anyone confirm whether this works or not? Or suggest one that would work?

kind regards,

wivane

This question has been asked many times before - basically, there are none, or very few, consumer-grade PCIe sound cards with drivers for OS X. There are several professional-grade PCIe cards, including models from ESI Audiotechnik (http://www.esi-audio.com/), RME Audio (http://www.rme-audio.de/), and Lynx Studio Technology (http://www.lynxstudio.com/). And of course there are quite a few Firewire (older), USB, and Thunderbolt options in the professional realm. The other option is of course a USB "sound stick", many of which work OOB with OS X, and they're dirt cheap! Here's a thread listing several that work: http://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/simple-plug-n-play-usb-audio-device-for-os-x.98115/.

there is one consumer grade pcie sound card that works with latest mac os x and kx driver, it is the sound blaster audigy rx, i have one of that, the output works fine, but the driver has no supporto for audio input like microphones, and also the card is not detected properly (the drivers sees it as generic sound card), i am working on a mod of the kx driver that recognizes the audigy rx, i will post it soon, for now with the actual drivers it works

i have seen all of the apple documentation and I have not seen any real alternative method to implement pci audio drivers using non deprecated stuff, but the good news is that there is not the need to rewrite all the driver, only the part that is used with Mac because the driver uses a modular structure that works for both Mac and windows, and then show specific parts for the 2 platforms, so it may be done without rewriting the hall thing, but I think it's better to ask also help to some one that is more expert than me in writing driver for OS X, because the driver is a lot complex, but for now it works on Sierra
