Hi guys,

I'm trying to update my version of OpenCore and am getting nowhere fast.
Reason: tried upgrading Big Sur to Monterey and got "A required firmware update could not be installed" error.
I have OC 6.4 and need 7.4 to resolve this, apparently
I have downloaded 7.4 and copied these files to my EFI folder (overwriting what's currently there):-
Bootx64.efi (in BOOT Folder)
OpenCore.efi (in OC folder)
OpenRuntime (in Drivers folder)
..so far so good.

Following these instructions https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore...ncore-files-with-the-ones-you-just-downloaded I have to compare my config.plist (in live EFI folder) with sample.plist (from 7.4 OpenCore). This is what I am struggling with. Can anyone advise ?

OC 6.3 Config.plist (working with Big Sur attached)

Many thanks

TK

PS - I opened up both files in TextEdit (hoping there would be small changes) but they are hugely different .. so stuck - thanks very much!

I would suggest updating to Opencore 0.7.5 (released tomorrow) first with current configuration for Big Sur. Then after you have a problem free Dell inspiron computer running O.C. 0.7.5 for Big Sur you might want to try to update to Monterey.

Thanks @iWire - I'm still unclear on how to upgrade the config.plist file from 0.6.3 to 0.7.5, OpenCore say make a comparison but I need more help. Any idea how I do this ? (swapping/upgrading the files is easy)

open the new sample.plist by the side of your current config.plist using xcode or plisteditpro and make the needed changes

I couldn't upgrade my plist files properly, with plisteditpro, so I went into OpenCoreConfigurator and set up the 0.7.5 config.plist from scratch. The EFI now says it's version 0.7.5 and it booted up ok ... so far so good but .. once I am in Big Sur:-

1. If i use the command nvram 4D1FDA02-38C7-4A6A-9CC6-4BCCA8B30102:eek:pencore-version it still says my OC version is 0.6.4 (not sure if that is a problem or not)

2. If I try to run the Monterey upgrade is now gives me the A required firmware update could not be installed message. I've read up on this but interestingly if I boot using OC 0.6.4, I don't have an issue (using the same SSD). There is an Apple firmware folder in OC which 0.6.4 seems to notice but 0.7.5 doesn't (I could be wrong but that's how it appears to me)

I did successfully manage to get the upgrade to work by using OC 0.6.3 for the first half of the upgrade and then when it reboots, swapping to OC 0.7.5 on a USB stick for the 2nd part (although, I have only 1 monitor working on Monterey and a few other issues to iron out) Am making progress but this is hard work!

Will keep poking around and will update you if I make any significant progress.

Cheers

TK :)

PS - I will try OC 0.7.4 on my original SSD running Mojave to see if that allows the installation to run any better but as my machine has always been a hackintosh I don't have an original 'Apple' SSD

you need 0.7.4 for Monterey

always reset nvram when making any EFI changes

OK, done lots of experimenting, these are my results:-

1. Couldn't get Big Sur to upgrade to Monterey without booting via OC 0.6.4 first. if i use 0.7.3, 0.7.4 or 0.7.5 then I get firmware update errors when I select any APFS disk as part of the Monterey upgrade (HFS+ disks will work initially, but they will cause issues later in the install process)

2. One the initial part of the upgrade is done, I then have to boot up with OC 0.7.4 to complete the installation (i think it works with 0.7.3 and 0.7.5 as well, if I do it this way). I put OC 0.6.4 on a Monterey Installer USB stick in the EFI folder and then OC O.7.4 on my SSD EFI folder, so I can set off the upgrade and it works without any further intervention. Really not sure why 0.7.4 gives me the firmware error but not others.

3. Post Monterey installation my Nvidia GT710 is not properly recognised and I only have basic VGA output from it on one monitor with a basic resolution (3mb of video ram instead of 2GB). Additionally, my external USB Bluetooth and Wi-Fi also refuse to work. However, all of these work fine in BigSur (I use Wireless USB OC Big Sur Adapter v11 to recognise my WiFi dongle but it looks like it was copied across as part of the upgrade )

4. Lastly, worth mentioning that my Graphics card, external WiFi and Bluetooth dongles worked fine on Big Sur.

Cheers
