That's just great...

So I finally bought the RX580 Pulse after a long period of not being available in my country or being too expensive. I also made sure I got a card that works OOTB instead of having to wait for new drivers every update or having to lower the GPU acceleration in Photoshop with my current GTX 970 and now I read this crap. Maybe the next iMac will hold NVidia who knows, then I'm totally screwed again. OSX86 is supposed to be the cheap alternative for those who cannot afford Macs but if we have to keep changing GPU's it's going to be the other way round.
Having to enable iGPU seems like a tweak that is bound to fail sooner or later. Having to use lilu and whatever is not OOTB. We'll see when my RX580 arrives but hopefully I can do without both of these tweaks and still have proper OOTB functionality.

I just got my 580 RX and it too is having the .jpg quick look issue, but then the GTX 980 TI I had been using also had the same issue in High Sierra.

I just wish it there was an easy option to just drop a card in and have it work!!

UPDATE: Installed the NoVPAjpg kext and all is well now :)

I hear ya mate!

ps. I don't have that issue with my GTX970 in HS, I do have other issues though as mentioned. I'm still using SMBIOS 14,2 but I don't think that will hold in Mojave with RX580.

I’m using 14,2 in Mojave as well for the last couple weeks and it’s been working great! So far the RX580 has been fine (using it over the last couple hours). Power management has been great on my i7-4790k, still working properly.

I’m tempted to try 15,1 as that’s closer to my actual build but 14,2 has been working well enough for now.

I read somewhere it might be worth trying to use the one that matches your GPU so with RX580 that would be 18,3.
I will surely try when I get the card on Monday and if it doesn't work out I'll keep using 14,2 with that NoVPAjpg kext you mentioned above.

Alright, so I got the card and obviously had the same issue with the jpg quicklook as you guys.
Decided to try 18,3 on an external Mojave install but this only worked using Lilu, Whatevergreen AND iGPU, talk about OOTB experience :problem:
I guess this would probably work for 14,2 too but by enabling the iGPU my boot time crawled from less then 10s to 1m (didn't time it though)
Then I tried 6,1 without iGPU and it worked, fast boot again and no issues with jpg. It's probably placebo but MacOS even feels snappier and Power Management has more states. I've seen 8, 40, 41, 44 so far unlike 8 and 44 with iMac 14,2.
Then I removed Lilu and Whatevergreen and lo and behold, everything still works. So no kexts nor iGPU required using MacPro 6,1.
I then moved the MacPro 6,1 config from the USB to my main install while following P1LGRIM's iDiot's guide to iMessage because I didn't want to mess up my already working iCloud & Messages and again all was well. Let's just hope things continue to work out in the long run using this SMBIOS.

As for the RX580. The issue I thought I had with my GTX970 seems to be related to the monitor profile created with Colormunki Display that shows a blue color cast when trying to edit in Photoshop from Lightroom. If I knew this before I don't think I would have bought the RX580 because everything else feels the same and I have to again lower my Photoshop GPU settings to basic to avoid the issue (basic avoids the GPU for color profiling in Photoshop)
What surprised me was the performance in Windows which seems to be the same or even less then the GTX970 in some games.
Also I was going nuts over the stalling mouse issue, looked it up and lo and behold it's a known issue that has a temporary fix by using mouse trails in settings, hmmm.
So I can't say it was a smooth transition to AMD and those with the GTX970, hopefully they will release drivers soon because this card is still top notch. I'm keeping it for another week to see if the RX580 (and Mac Pro 6,1) stays stable during work.
Thanks to all who share their experience and expertise with us, without you guys all this wouldn't even exist! :headbang:

Try macPro 5.1 or 6.1 sysytem definition.
Thanks Gigamaxx. Tried switching to iMac 18,3 with no success (solution that I found elsewhere). Tried enabling Integrated Graphics (with multi-monitor) which did not boot correctly – I may have needed to configure clover; screen would show on IGP output only not on RX 580. Switching to MacPro 6,1 finally fixed the issue without any other issues.

Would it be worth trying to go back to iMac 18,3 with the kext solution? iMac 18,3 matches my hardware much better.

It is really weird how one user can have an ideal setup and another with similar hardware can't. If you are going to use a current iMac definition it seems that the IGPU setup can be a crucial factor. If its not set up correctly then problems arise. iMac 14,2 has been a good all around ID that works for Nvidia and AMD cards, but some still have issues with it. personally, I've used MacBook, iMac, Mac Mini and Mac Pro definitions on the same system, ran benchmarks and couldn't tell the difference. Others insist on matching their Symbios to their hardware for optimal performance. It may make a difference if using pro apps that require the specific use of a particular hardware component. I know that the 18.3 ID can be fussy and requires a few fixes and patches to get it to act like a real Mac so its sometimes just easier to try a different definition that works for you. If you want to try it again I would get a spare disk and meddle with it till you get it working well then make it your main setup. Read up on guides for your motherboard and cpu and which version of OS as well. Good Luck, and have fun or at least try to.
