MacMan's Haswell Test Build: Core i7-4770K + GA-Z87X-UD3H

jenzen,

It is always the case that TonyMac work carefully to get thing correct. Its not their money at stake when things go wrong and the guys that run this site all have regular jobs, so it is very much done in spare time. My comments were not aimed specifically at you however, there are quite a few people who want information NOW! We all need to 'hold' our excitement, some info has been released, confirmation of success and a buyers guide will be compiled and released, whether that will be on the 15th of the month (which is normal) or a little later, time will tell.

Cheers,

Adrian B

Just a question from a Hackintosh newbie, how much help do you guys get from OSX 10.8.4 released with the new MB Air? Doesn't that version include alot of the needed support for Haswell?

Personally I belive it is well past time to replace my (always to hot, loud and weak) 2011 AMD graphics Mac mini with something more powerful and quite. I am thinking of a Gigabyte (or Asus) mITX with a i7-4770 and some nice midrange graphics to that :)

Keep up the good work!

Yeah there is already support for Haswell in the new MB air. But that comes with OS X 10.8.4 pre installed with a special build and its own supported Kernel.

To be honest with only the MB Air released at the moment I don't see why Apple would release support for Haswell until the Mac Pro is released later this year. But even then it may come with its own special build like the MB Air. I know that if you change your system definition you get a supplemental update for that build, relevant to your hardware or not.

Makes you wonder until/if Apple releases all of its units using Haswell that they will fully support it in the OS.

Can anyone explain to me why osx micro kernel needs to be updated every time a new CPU is released but the windows 7
hybrid kernel supports them without an update.

What i've learned from this forum and this particular post:

  • Haswell is supported in 10.8.4 (Special build for Macbook Air) and in some way in 10.9.
  • The first release we will see on this site, will (hopefully) be when the source code for 10.8.4 is released.
  • It is against the forum rules to discuss 10.8.4 source code and 10.9, as they are currently unreleased - thereby it's essentially against the rules to talk about preliminary haswell support, until there is an official release from Apple.
  • No one needs any help in testing or making Haswell work as of now - according to posts in this thread.
  • You are only allowed to have Motherboard, CPU and GFX info as your signature on this forum.

This is my understanding. Basically what this says is: "Be quiet, be patient, and check back at this site every now and then to see if something has happened regarding Haswell compatibility".

I don't know why people are assuming the Mac Pro is going to be released before the MacBook Pro/Retina is updated. I still bet there are upgraded MacBook Pros in time for the tail end of back to school shopping. I believe they are waiting because the chips they want to use for the Retinas are not shipping at this time. It would be asinine for them to have a better igpu in the Air than the 13" retina, when the retina so desperately needs a better igpu.

The chips likely used in the next retinas come out sometime in Q3(July-Sept), while the Mac Pro's chip will come sometime after Ivy Bridge E is launched the second week in September, the Ivy Bridge E Xeons won't arrive until after the Ivy Bridge E i7s. So in all likelihood the Mac Pro won't be out until early Q4. Mavericks and Mac Pro will probably launch at the same time. Its possible all lines could see an update all at once in Oct/Nov, but I still think the macbook pro/retinas will be refreshed before than.

I'm waiting also.
Have a Haswell build as well. :D

Intel Core i7 4770K
Gygabyte GA-Z87X-D3H
2x4GB Kingston Beast 1600Mhz
ASUS GeForce 660Ti Top DCII
Fractal Design Define XL R2

I really don't like Windows anymore.
After 5 years my MacBook Pro (mid 2007) died!
I decided to buy the newest hardware and new i'm stuck with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.04.

Come on and let the good times role!

Does this work imaus?

I decided to get the same build XD

Intel 4770K
Gigabyte Z87-UD3H
32GB Patriot Intel Extreme Masters RAM
256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD (OS Drive)
MSI 2GB GTX 680
2x 3TB Western Digital Red HDD

Since I'm waiting for Mavericks Haswell support, I'm just going to try out Windows 8.1 Preview for now.
