Update Directly to macOS High Sierra

Status
Not open for further replies.
Updated to 10.13.1 without any problems today.

Established users of macOS Sierra who wish to update directly to macOS High Sierra can do so just like a regular Mac would. These fully native methods require no USB creation or preparation and allow you to keep all of your files and settings.

Before you begin, we strongly recommend performing a full backup of your existing system using Carbon Copy Cloner. By doing this, you can always go back to your working macOS Sierra installation.

Guide: Update Directly to macOS High Sierra (APFS)
Apple is now using APFS (Apple File System) instead of HFS+ for the default file system in macOS High Sierra for solid state drives. If you have a SSD, this guide will auto-convert it to APFS by default. Users with traditional 'spinning' hard disk drives will remain on HFS+ by default. Using APFS with Clover requires copying the apfs.efi file from the installer to your Clover EFI. If you would like to update without converting to APFS use the HFS+ guide below.

1. Update your existing Clover install to v4173+ using MultiBeast or official Clover package.

2. Open Clover configuration folder on the root of your system drive or EFI Partition using EFI Mounter v3. Copy FakeSMC.kext and any other extra necessary kexts to /EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other/. If you need essential kexts, download them here.

3. Copy apfs.efi to /EFI/CLOVER/drivers64UEFI/.

4. Download Install macOS High Sierra Application from the Mac App Store. When complete, the app will open. Please note, the Application will disappear after use.

5. Choose system drive for install (Example: Macintosh HD). When complete, the computer will automatically reboot.

6. At Clover boot screen, choose Boot macOS Install option (Example: Boot macOS Install from Macintosh HD). Choosing your system drive will go back to your previous installation without updating.

7. Complete the installation process- the computer will automatically reboot a few times.

8. At Clover boot screen, choose Boot macOS option (Example: Boot macOS from Macintosh HD). The computer will then complete the update.

Alternative Guide: Update Directly to macOS High Sierra (HFS+)
Some users with solid state storage may choose to update to macOS High Sierra without converting to APFS filesystem, thus maintaining HFS+ filesystem. This guide will not auto-convert your HFS+ SSD to APFS.

3. Download Install macOS High Sierra Application from the Mac App Store. When complete, the app will open. Close the window.

4. Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and type the following:

Code:
/Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/startosinstall --converttoapfs NO

5. At prompt, type A to agree to the License Agreement.

Please let us know how these guides work for you! Thanks and good luck!

Hello people

My worst decision was to follow this guide had working perfectly with my MacOS Sierra, but when trying to use this guide step by step verifying each item to start the installer on the first reboot began to install but after a couple of minutes I gave an error in the installation and now it does not start my system with MacOS nor recover it with the copy made with the Carbon Copy Cloner nor the aforementioned recovery partition serves .... it is clear that I have dualboot with windows and I am afraid to delete that partition too ...

I hope someone can help me recover my installation

Sincerely Kehakuma

Had some problems with 10.12.6 after the latest update and tried to update directly to 10.13.1 - so far everything seem to work except of what im suspecting to be the nvidia driver. The performance is not good. Playing 1080p video works, but 4k is horrible!

i have the same problem, i followed this instructions step by step and it leads to bricking my main computer, i can not go back to the working sierra and the HS installation hangs at Apple logo with "MACH reboot" error.

i shared a little bit more in a thread i created here :https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...uck-at-mach-reboot-main-pc-went-brick.239271/

i also don't know what to do now....

Going to bump this thread since I just upgraded to High Sierra.

I only needed to update my Clover EFI and fix the audio after the installation.
Other than that, I'm still golden!

thank you Tonymac and Crew! :headbang:

hi
im using mac on Asus X450 LC ,
HDD

current os version is 10.12.2 , as I want to run the command in step4 for disabling APFS, I get this message on terminal:

could not get license agreement

what should I do?

exactly same issue, tried everything i found online

"could not get license agreement"

Updated to 10.13.2 without any problems today. I used "Alternative Guide: Update Directly to macOS High Sierra (HFS+)"
Great work!

Jane, stop this crazy thing!!!!

So I tried to do the upgrade but the "loading bar" stops about 90% every time. I'm OK not doing the upgrade but how the hell do I get to stop restarting into the upgrade on it's own?

I suppose there is a Terminal command I need to use to cancel the upgrade??
