Epic Games VP of Product Development, Paul Meegan announced yesterday on Twitch that Unreal Tournament 2014 development has begun from the ground up and the game will be a free release for PC and Mac; Linux will also get a version. Epic Games plans to make money by pushing a user-driven mod marketplace.

"So what’s the catch? It will take many months until the game is playable by gamers. This is real development from scratch. When the game is playable, it will be free. Not free to play, just free.
We’ll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic. That’s how we plan to pay for the game."

Up to this day Unreal Engine and all the Unreal Tournament games are amongst my preferred and happiest experiences with games.

These are fantastic news!

Me too! I have been playing Unreal and Unreal Tournament since the release of Unreal. I loved them all, some better than others!

Same here,....

The Quake franchise was a distant second to the Unreal franchise IMO. Nothing measured up to Unreal IMO,.......nothing!

Great news indeed,....

I thought all hope was lost with respect to something new,....

As far as I am concerned if any game uses any given new Unreal engine it should be Unreal specific first,.....then an only then should other games be able to use the new Engine.

What about CryEngine??? :silent::silent::silent::silent::silent::silent:

I read some news about CryTek has some financial problems..... And until today I still didn't understand why Crysis 3 was not a top selling game... They said EA ruined the 3rd of the franchise.....>< Is it true???
