got it from Apple Store. Installing on MacbookPro (genuine apple) works fine via terminal method

I was using a newer laptop that didn't let me choose a partition scheme. I ended up having to use a different computer to format the USB drive and made sure I chose the GUID Scheme. That seemed to solve my problem and the boot drive was created successfully.
