"Unable to open NVIDIA Driver Manager"

When you first boot into single user mode it prints information including the command required to remount the file system as read/write. Please follow those instructions.

I can't remember the exact command but it's something along the lines of:

mount -o remount,rw /

You're a champ. I should have read. Mounting the disk as RW did return a message:

"er: mount check: ro->rw update: no encryption rolling in progress for volume, bailing"

but following your other commands, then uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers appears to have solved the issue. That was weird. Disk Utility doesn't see anything funny so I hope I'm good? A reinstall may be in my near future.
