The FireWire 800/400 card to own for 100% compatibility

Uh oh.

Switched out my old firewire card that was having weird issues with two of these Startech ones.

Things have been going well until yesterday, when suddenly my system (Lion) keeps hanging randomly. I've tried unhooking everything bit by bit, and what I *think* I've found, (still testing), is that it won't hang if I turn off all of my FW drives...

Could this be an issue with the card?? Not really sure how to explore this any further.

Hey, useful thread!
I found these 2 which appear to be the same card as everyone is talking about?

I live in Canada, and the first link is a local store and price beats their components. So I just wanted to make sure this was the right card. (I'm waiting for Black Friday to see if I can get the price down.)

Thanks!

This card works great for audio recording in Mac OS X, but you might want to hold off for a while as it this card has wake/sleep/shutdown issues with the new Gigabyte UEFI mohterboards and there is no fix yet. See http://www.tonymacx86.com/general-h...ep-wake-shutdown-restart-issues-thread-7.html

Other than the known issue, this card performs really well, recording up to 192 khz 24 bit without any problems.

Hmmm, I'm using a Z68 motherboard with a non-UEFI BIOS (I actually can't sleep my system at all right now). So wouldn't I be fine getting this card?

Edit: Looks like people with Z68 boards are having problems too...bummer

if that's the case then you probably will be fine. I used the startech card with my previous non UEFI motherboard, and sleep/shutdown worked without any problems.

So the problem was only when *sleeping* it would shut down and restart? Otherwise it worked fine? The problem with my board right now is that it won't wake up from sleep (no keyboard mouse anything).

The problem with this card is that my machine won't wake from sleep. and system automatically restarts when I click shutdown. If you're not on UEFI bios then you probably won't have the shutdown problem. As for sleep, many hackintoshers can live without it. If you can return the product after a try-out period then it's worth a try.

You should read this thread. It doesn't solve the issue for everyone but it's a thread on your problem: http://www.tonymacx86.com/general-h...leep-wake-shutdown-restart-issues-thread.html

So is there solutions OOB right now ? I would like to have a hackintosh with a normal FW800. That's the last component I'm looking for.

I've got two solutions right now :

- Buying a Z77X-UP5 TH then a cable for thunderbolt FW800. (80€+20€ more than the other solution)
- Buying a Z77X-UD5H with a cheap but still good FW800 PCIe card (in that case wich one will you sugest under 100€ ???)

I won't use Firewire for sound as I prefer using HDMI devices. But I prefer having something without any surprise working flawlessly OOB...

Maybe buying an UP5 will be a better solution in that case, what do you think ?

Thanks in advance.

PS : I don't need FW400.

I bought one of these Syba cards and honestly it has me perplexed beyond belief. My 400 port is working perfectly (I have a ProFire 2626 audio interface hooked up to it). No latency issues or anything... but for some reason neither of the 800 ports work. I can connect a drive and hear it spinning, but OSX just doesn't pick up on it - even in the system profiler. Just the 400 bus. Any ideas? I've already tried swapping into different PCIe slots with no success.
