Here's a low cost option for those with a 4K monitor with DP input. Selling for $45 right now on Ebay.com
I haven't tested this specific card but all my Nvidia cards sleep and wake normally unlike AMD cards.

The seller does professional refurbishing and has a return policy so no worries there. Note that these are workstation class cards, no good for any kind of gaming. Uses very little power so your OEM Dell PSU is powerful enough. If you need a LP bracket for the SFF Optiplex just ask the seller for one. Brand new NVS 510s sell for $258 on Ebay.
There is currently an even better deal on the NVS 510 on Ebay. This is much better than the GT 710 for connecting to 4K monitors. The GT 710 doesn't have DP at all. This has four miniDP outputs. You can run 1 to 4 4K monitors at 60 Hz. Can also be used LP in an SFF. Takes up only one slot. Low power usage, less than 40W. Sells for $34.90. It's also Dell branded. Free shipping in the USA. Ships to the UK and many other countries as well. Shipping/Import charges will apply.

I'm not sure which Dell Optiplex you've got. Would you upgrade your hardware profile. https://www.tonymacx86.com/account/account-details

It should look something like this:

Motherboard: Dell Optiplex 9020 MT
CPU: i5-4570 (whichever you have)
Graphics: RX 580

I'm certain that if you look for an i5 version with HD4600 you can come very close to the price of the i3. I wouldn't use HD4400 exclusively but you could possibly install a dedicated graphics card and use the i3. In my opinion, it's always better to have 4 cores instead of 2. The i3s don't really offer much energy savings over an i5. You can also get the i5s in the lower clocked S versions if you want lower clock speeds and lower energy consumption. i5's have more L3 cache, double actually. That is important for performance. iMacs from 2013/14 used the exact same i5 Haswell CPUs you can get in the 7020/9020 Optiplex models.

Dell is selling their refurbs with HD 4400 on Ebay for $129 which is about the same as the i5 versions cost.

You can get an i5-4590 version for the same price. The choice is easy.

When brand new, an i5-4590 cost almost $200. Now you can get the whole computer + Windows license, not just the CPU, for $129. That is a great deal. You can also find great i5 and i7 Optiplex deals on Newegg so check there regularly for prices similar to these.

When I built my first Gigabyte hackintosh in 2012 it had a core i3-2105 and 8GB of ram and cost me over $550. I had to order each part separately and put them together. It was a valuable experience but expensive. It wasn't nearly as fast as this Dell Optiplex is. The price of just the Gigabyte Z68 motherboard was about $120.

If I could have bought something this good for $129 that runs the latest macOS available. That would have been an easy choice too.

Bought an Optiplex 9020 SFF i5-4670 4x3,4GHz 128GB SSD, 8GB RAM.
Thanks for your advice!

Hey guys, I've an Optiplex 9020 SFF with no external GPU and the Fenvi 919 added. I did some power consumption measurements in case you are interested. I'm running Mojave and connected to a LG 4K Display

Idle with display enabled: ~17 watts
Idle with display showing screensaver: ~25 watts
Sleep: ~1.5w

@mrcn1 I know this was an old question... but if you get the "USB device descriptor failure" when connecting the BT (Or it just doesn't show up) its a very good chance that you have the USB connector wired wrong, I had the 2 data lines reversed and it gave this error, as soon as I swapped them over it worked straight away.

I'm having problems with my that.
BT has never worked for me really, but i didn't care. Now, I thought, might need it someday, so let's see.

I have 9020 MT, BCM94360CS2, wifi working OOTB. Connected to the usb header on the mobo.
But BT remains not found:

not seen on the bus as well:

a finally nothing in io:

tried windows, wifi worked after some trials, BT is giving me "usb device descriptor failure".

no idea what's next. is this a hardware issue? what do you think?

Were you able to solve the problem of waking with the RX580?

Hi Uli, if you are referring to the Wake->Crash problem, can you take a look at the method that worked for me? Post 716 in this thread. Its more of a work-around than a solution.

I have a different RX580 (seems like they don't necessarily act exactly alike) and different monitors/cables, so my experience has been a bit different than @bulbmkr's. Mine does wake with the same symptoms (see post #703 for his video). So for the 9020's using integrated-graphics or NVS510 I do use sleep, but for the RX580 machine I simply shut down rather than sleeping.

Several people are continuing to look at getting sleep to work properly on their RX580-equipped 9020's.

I have the same problem. I can't deal with point 2 "2. Boot. When dGPU gets initialized the monitor starts going in and out of Power-save mode."
