I've had this problem on and off with both of my Hacks (both have TI chipsets). It seems like some applications, when accessing my external FW drives, run incredibly slowly. Others have no noticeable problems. Is there a test I can run to evaluate the actual transfer speed of an external drive, i.e. a benchmark with numbers?

Also, it seems that if I end a transfer, then start another one, the drive can take 15 seconds or so before it responds again - even if I'm coping files from/to the same directory. I get the beachball cursor and a sound like the drive is spinning up; the drive has not had time to go into sleep mode though.

I hate to disconnect all of my FW drives and test them individually (this is the system I do all my photo/video work with), but if there's not a known issue I can correct otherwise, I guess I'll need to do that.

Suggestions?

have you tried different drives or enclosures? sometime the drive chipset can cause problems (disconnects).

a good disk benchmark is Blackmagic Disk Speed Test.
