Change frightens me. I have done many successful Hackintosh builds and installs, all using Chameleon/Multibeast. So when it became clear changing to Clover would be necessary to upgrade to El Capitan, I immediately started dreading it. I’d attempted a Clover based install before and given up. For people in the video biz, it felt like the change from Final Cut Pro 7 to Final Cut Pro X. Clover looked nice and was impressive, but Chameleon was the familiar workhorse.

Long story short: I upgraded all of my real Macs and really wanted to bring my trusty SandyBridge build along for the ride. Here is how I upgraded Yosemite + Chameleon install directly to El Capitan + Clover. I have tested these steps and they work for a fresh install also.

System Specs:

MB: P67A-UD3-B3 w/ F9 Bios
CPU: i5 2500k @ 3.8GHz
RAM: 24GB Kingston DDR3 1600 (2 x 4GB & 2 x 8GB)
GPU: ASUS DirectCU II - AMD R9 270X - 2GB DDR5
Boot Drive: Samsung 845DC EVO 480GB

Staring Software Config:
Yosemite 10.10.5 and Chameleon Boot Loader

PROCESS:

  • Download El Capitan Installer from App Store (10.11.1 is what was used for this guide)

  • Download latest Unibeast, El Capitan Post-Install Tools, Clover Configurator, and Clover ALC110 script for Audio. All are available via Tony's install Guide.

  • Prepare a 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive in Disk utility [Use USB 2.0 drive and port ONLY]
    • Partition Settings
      • 1 Partition
      • GUID Partition Table
      • Name: USB
      • Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

  • Run Unibeast to Create USB installer
    • Use option for Legacy Clover, not UEFI.
    • After successful completion, copy Post-Install Tools, Configurator and ALC110 Audio script to root of USB Flash Drive.

  • Prepare BIOS Settings:
    • Use the same BIOS setting that you would for chameleon with the following two exceptions:
      • Disable onboard USB 3.0 (Causes hang on [ PCI configuration begin ])
      • Disable CPU EIST (Prevents AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext Panic without having to use cpus=1 flag)
        • Supposedly can be fixed later with SSDT, but I found adding an SSDT reduces the performance of my GPU by about 35%. Without SSDT and EIST, the CPU still appears to step normally according to the Intel Power Gadget App, performance and thermals are all good. So I’m not worried about it.

  • Boot to USB Installer.
    • Add -v (verbose boot) flag in Clover
    • [Only if doing a fresh install] Partition and prepare HDD/SSD using DiskUtility.
    • Install/Update OS X

  • Reboot to Clover on USB and boot to your internal HDD/SSD.

  • Complete Setup Assistant tasks.

  • Open Post Installation Tools you copied to USB drive.
    • Run Clover installer: Clover_v2.3k_r3320-Legacy.pkg
    • Run CustoMac Essentials Installer

  • Run Clover Configurator
    • Mount EFI Partition located on HDD/SSD
    • Open config.plist file in Clover Configurator
      • [Note] Some settings are specifically for the R9 270x. If you use a different GPU, your steps will be different.
      • [Note 2] I am only listing settings that need changing. Only disable or change a default setting if mentioned below.
      • Under Boot Section
        • Enable: dart=0
        • Enable: kext-dev-mode=1
        • [270x Only] Add to Custom Flags: GraphicsEnabler=1
      • [270x Only] Under Graphics Section
        • Under ‘FB Name’, enter: Futomaki
        • Enable: Inject ATI
        • Disable: Inject intel
      • [270x Only] Under Kernel and Kext Patches Section
        • Enter the following to ATI Connectors Data:
          • 00040000040300000001010112040401000400000403000000010201220505020400000014020000000103000000060600080000040200000001040011020103
        • Enter the following to ATI Connectors Patch:
          • 00040000040300000001000012040101000800000402000000010000220502030002000004020000000100001000030604000000140200000001000011020505
        • Enter the following to ATI Connectors Controller:
          • 7000
      • Under SMBIOS Section:
        • Click the Magic Wand Button.
        • Click the MacPro
        • Select MacPro 3,1 from top-left dropdown.
        • Click OK.
    • File > Save to save config.plist
    • Quit Configurator.

  • Cross your fingers and reboot directly to your HDD/SSD.

  • If all goes well, Run the ALC110 Audio script and reboot to get audio working.

At this point everything should be working with the exception of the on-board USB 3.0 ports.

So far, everything is running very stable and no noticeable issues.
Dual displays are working perfectly on the 270X which I know has been an issue for some with the R9 cards and Clover. I have noticed a nice performance increase, especially in GPU benchmarks. Can’t say for sure if it is El Cap, Clover or both, but I’m very happy so far.

I'm getting a black screen after booting into the install.

I've tried all the different ports. I'm running an r9 280x. Any ideas?

Thanks,

JP

Why all these steps to enable the GPU? I have a 6870 but recently borrowed a Gigabyte R9 270x from my friend for testing purposes and I just swapped out the cards and the 270x works OOB (I also run a Sandy Bridge rig, Z68X-UD3H-B3 and i5-2500K). I left "Inject ATI" on in Clover and that's basically it.

Thank you so much for posting this! Will definitely give a try once USB 3 problem is figured out. I've used all of my PCI ports so thats just not an option.

So brief update: Awhile back I started to run into the black screen issues when booting with two monitors. I have not been able to nail down the issue. One minute everything was working fine, next minute not so much. After much :banghead: I just started disconnecting one of the displays before booting/rebooting. It's a PITA, but the rest of the system has been very solid. At some point I want to try to clone the system and redo a clean install using the new Multibeast and research some new solutions to the problem. But if you are running into the black screen, booting with only one display and connecting a second after logging in seems to be a workaround.

I am not having any issues with sleep. USB has been pretty solid. I have one WD USB 3.0 drive that doesn't get along with the configuration and starts locking up the system.

Hi sevoneone, thanks for your post. I'm tempted to upgrade my trusty sandy bridge also to UEFI but I'm worried that my existing Yosemite HDD will not run off the UEFI. I would still like to boot up the OSX so I can still access it. Will this work? Thanks.
