Comments

This build was picked up from a local Craigslist sale. A friend of mine wanted a reliable workstation, and $340 was too great of an offer to pass up. The graphics card that came with the tower was actually a Radeon 4770, but the card isn't supported under OS X, so I yanked it and slapped in a Low Profile Radeon 6450 I had lying around.

Installation Notes
I actually own this same motherboard with another processor in the tower I built at work, so installation was just as easy as the last time.

Once BIOS settings were optimized (see below), the UniBeast Installer booted right up.I used "npci=0x2000" as a flag, though this will not be necessary later. Installation was very easy, just follow The Guide.

BIOS Settings
With this board, only a few changes needed to be made. However, my BIOS had been updated regularly by the previous user. Make sure you are running the latest BIOS for maximum compatibility.

First, load optimized defaults on the board. (Optional) Disable the Asus ExpressGate for a faster boot. Next, set BOTH SATA controllers to AHCI (the Marvell ports and the Intel ports are under different headers, make sure both are in AHCI mode or your drives will not show up in OS X). VT-d is disabled by default, but double check that it is in fact disabled.

Though my memory is rated at 1600MHz, the overclock causes instability in OS X (though not in Windows) so I'll be running at 1066MHz (reported as 1069MHz in OS X).

NOTE: Be sure to change your sleep states to S3 ONLY or sleep/wake will not work properly.

MultiBeast Settings

The Radeon 6450 in this built works with the default "GraphicsEnabler=No" as this platform does not have integrated graphics.

A Note: I ran MultiBeast WITHOUT a DSDT on this board. I also ran Easy Beast before I configured drivers/etc. From what I can tell, everything runs well without the DSDT at the moment, though I may extract and patch my own later. IF not using a DSDT, you will need to use a KEXT based HDAEnabler. You can either add that directly in your MultiBeast settings or install manually (available through Toleda's github.)

The Marvell Ethernet Controller which governs both Ethernet ports under OS X does not have a kext built in to MultiBeast. The kext must be applied manually, and I have attached it to this post in the form of a complete IONetworkingFamily.kext.

The Intel 80GB SSD only has a 512 block sector, so the boot0 4K sector boot fix not required in this instance, but should you receive a "boot0" error, see here: boot0 Error: The Official Guide.

Updates

[09/2015]
I've since swapped that little half height Radeon 6450 with a bit more powerful Radeon 6670. This didn't require any more editing in the bootloader or files on my part, a simple swap and everything is fine. It's got twice the VRAM and a marginal performance gain.

[12/03/2015]
Quite a few changes have been made to this system, including a bootloader swap to Clover, another GPU change, drive configuration changes, and a case swap. I am in the process of building a working install of OS X El Capitan, and will most likely post a completely new thread once the upgrades are complete. Thanks always for the views and help.

A pleasure to be featured on the home page, as always. A huge thank you to everyone who develops the tools for projects such as these.

InsaneCultist - I enjoyed reading your thread. Good job! I am always please to see someone that can appreciate the X58 and the 1366 socket. And it is really great that the X58 systems will run all of the OS X releases of the last five years.

Good modding,

Personally, I have three that I use myself. The X99 workstation sits at my desk at home and is my typical daily driver.

The iMac G4 NUC project was just a fun pickup. I had a job interview at a datacentre and they were throwing away a beautiful 20 inch iMac G4 with a fried logic board, so I decided to strip it and follow in Ersterhernd's footsteps.

My father uses the "G5" (my first Hack) for simple email/etc. I just went kind of overkill on the parts at the time since his last computer lasted him about 10 years.
The "First" X58 spare parts build is for my desk at work. The company I work for has workstations that are beyond obsolete (and it's my job to keep them running) but I needed something a bit more powerful than the Pentium 4 HP tower they were providing me to manage the network, so I hacked an older X58 tower that a friend of mine gave me for some work I did for him.

As far as this one goes, I saw it on my local craigslist for a heck of a deal, and put my tax refund towards the purchase. It will most likely go to a friend of mine, as his 2012 MacBook Pro isn't quite sufficient for the CAD work that he does. Of course, the GPU will need to be upgraded, as you have indicated. I just don't have anything quite that powerful just "lying around" to use in the tower at this time. The 6450 is for sure temporary, but this is proof that it pays to have an OS X compatible GPU (or two) lying around for testing and configuring.

I'm yet to work out the issue on overclocking. This specific tower should be overclocked, in my opinion, especially since it has the liquid cooler. However, I have plans to put a W3680 Six Core Xeon in it for that friend of mine, so perhaps the cooler will go in my other build. Only time will tell. Thanks for your interest!
