[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hi all - happy new year!

I did two relatively innocuous things and now I'm experiencing significant instability on my hack.

1. I deleted two Network options from my Network preferences (Bluetooth PAN and Ethernet 2 - both unused).
2. I checked my BIOS settings (but Exited without Saving).

Ever since then, I've been experiencing random crashes/freezes - no discernable pattern and each one requiring hard reboot.

I've since powered down, waited a couple seconds (to clear CMOS), pressed the power button without power (seems to flash all the mobo lights as a discharge).

Up and running for now but curious what lines of debugging I should start. I've seen some threads on 10-15 second crashing and this feels similar.

That being said, before I powered down just now (before it was all resets), it ran all night with a heavy download with no problem and woke from sleep this morning.

This raises another question - is restarting via software reset, reset button and power down/power up different for Clover/Mac? I've done dozens of software restarts without problems but the power down/power up with CMOS reset seems to have helped.

First, as you've read numerous times, thank you so very much for your work and dedication. I would not have gotten this far on my hackintosh if it weren't for you and other dedicated members. I am running into hair pulling issues with my Gigabyte Radeon Vega 64.

Following your guide, I was initially able to get everything working, including dual boot to Windows 10 through Clover. Awesome, right? Didn't understand why people were having problems if they just followed your instructions step by step, word for word. Well, I came home one day and noticed the hackintosh was on...toddler son was fascinated by the Alienware head (using a legacy Aurora 7500 case) and must have toggled it. I thought, no problem. But when I restarted the system, I would get to the log in screen and everything would freeze. I thought this was a USB issue. I also had issues booting into Windows through Clover. I then thought a fresh install would help, if my system got corrupted by power cycling from my son during boot up. Sometimes I could get to the Apple login screen with the Vega, other times I would get a kernel panic at the graphics portion of the boot. I've been able to work through all of that by booting using iGPU. If I switch over to the Vega 64, I either get a blank screen with some short horizontal, multicolored lines or, if lucky, to the Apple login screen, but again frozen. I'm currently using iMac 19,1 but have tried iMacPro 1,1 without any difference. I have the latest Lilu and Whatevergreen versions.

I thought I had the problem licked, and it was a HDMI port issue. Last week, I was able to get everything working using a DisplayPort cable. However, after a few reboots, I ran into the same problem of freezing on the login page when booting up with the Vega 64.

When using the iGPU, I can see the Vega 64 listed in my Graphics/Displays portion of the Hardware list on the hackintosh.

I've wondered if it is a hardware problem, but the Vega works fine in Windows.

I'm not quite ready to give up on this card, but I'm at my wits end. After about 2 weeks trying to work this out and reading as much as I can, I'm no where further than when I first started. My tolerant wife has commented that I'm obsessed with this. If you or anyone else can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for the clear and detailed description! Quite refreshing...

Some suggestions:

• Perform a CMOS Reset just to be extra safe. This means shorting the two designated pins on the bottom right side of the motherboard as mentioned in the Designare owner's manual.
  • This takes just a second and provides the single best "detoxification" therapy.
  • All BIOS parameters will be reset to factory defaults, so please configure them again starting with Save & Exit --> Load Optimized Defaults. It is necessary to start with Load Optimized Defaults because of various power and other settings that get applied.
• Then try the attached modified config.plist. Simply copy your serial numbers back into SMBIOS/RtVariables before use.

CMOS Reset is an amazingly effective procedure for restoring the motherboard to good health. It will reset BIOS parameters to factory defaults, clear NVRAM, clear everything else from CMOS, etc.

If the system has been hard-booted several times, if devices have been installed and removed repeatedly, if system has been crashing regularly, etc. then it's good to do a CMOS Reset as a first step.

Hey mate, I have the same setup as you. I do find that my bootup is quite slow but have not had issues with slowness (I dont think) elsewhere. What is you SMBIOS set at? iMac 19,1 or iMacPro 1,1?

I'm using iMac 19,1 - do you have better performance on iMacPro?

I haven't tried the iMacPro SMBIOS as yet. I will most likely give this a go later today. I will let you know how I go.

@CaseySJ It might be worth mentioning in your build (unless I missed it! doh!) that this mobo only has a single f_usb 2.0 9-pin connector and if you want to connect BOTH a liquid cooler with USB control features (like the Kraken x62) and the Fenvi FV-T919 card with the Bluetooth, that an f_usb expansion module is necessary. I was thrown for a loop when I received my Fenvi card post-build and had nowhere to connect it!

@CaseySJ - what about the difference between restarting from the OS and powering down and powering up (without a CMOS reset). Is there some reason to expect unstable behavior from constant restarts?
