Comments:
I was looking for a silent, fast, slick, relatively cheap machine, something that is already good but it can turn into a monster with a few upgrades. Something like a Mac Pro but in a smaller package. My primary machine is a 15" MacBook Pro (mid' 2010) and I'm just tired of working on a laptop. If you're not carrying it around, nothing beats the comfort of a desktop.
For the components, i just followed the CustoMac Builder Buyer's Guide and did the best i could with the budget i had.
Preparation:
First download UniBeast ML 1.7.0 and MultiBeast ML 5.2.1 and the DSDT file (DSDT-GA-H77N-WIFI-F2.aml) if you want to have HDMI audio. Then just follow the UniBeast Guide which is pretty straight foward.
BIOS Configuration:
Get into the BIOS Settings (DEL), Load Optimized Defaults (F7) and then adjust the following:
Peripherals
Power Management
BIOS Features
MultiBeast 5.2.1 Installation Settings:
Restart after running MultiBeast... and it's done!
Success!
Performance:
Geekbench 2: 64 bit Score
Testing:
The machine is completely up to date and everything works besides the following issues/problems:
PS:
Conclusion:
So far those are all the issues/problems i've encountered. Everything else appears to be running smooth. If any new issue/problem comes up, i'll be updating this post.
The fantastic guides and software enabled a trouble free build, even for a first time CustoMac builder.
Thanks to tonymacx86 and everyone at this forum for making all of this possible.

BIOS Configuration:

Peripherals
- xHCI Mode = AUTO (default)
- XHCI Hand-off = Enabled (default)
- EHCI Hand-off = Enabled (default was Disabled)
Power Management
- High Precision Event Timer = Enabled (default)
BIOS Features
- Intel Virtualization Technology = Enabled (default was Disabled)
MultiBeast 5.2.1 Installation Settings:
Restart after running MultiBeast... and it's done!
Success!
Performance:
Geekbench 2: 64 bit Score
Testing:
The machine is completely up to date and everything works besides the following issues/problems:
- Native wifi not recognised. Just change intel's original half mini pci-e card for one that works.
- Native Bluetooth works out of the box but is not immediately recognised on Login screen when starting up the machine. I recommend having a bluetooth dongle adapter.
- Computer sleep from Energy Saver preferences panel doesn't work, but Display sleep and Sleep from Apple menu works fine. And if you really want "auto sleep", just use the software PleaseSleep.
- Gigabyte's H77N-WIFI has 2 rear HDMI ports, but on OS X only one port fully works, the other one doesn't have audio.
- FaceTime crashes when completing a call.
PS:
- I've checked all the network cards on MultiBeast installation just to be sure, since i would try a few cards to see if i could get wifi and bluetooth to work natively, but no success on the cards i tried. So i went for the popular solution, the Atheros AR5BHB92, and now i have only wifi working natively. As for the bluetooth, i'm using the bluetooth adapter listed above.
- I changed the default system definition Mac Pro 3,1 to Mac Pro 5,1. You just have to delete AppleTyMCEDriver.kext from /system/library/extensions folder before running MultiBeast.
- Upgraded Mountain Lion from 10.8.2 to 10.8.3 directly from App Store without having to reinstall anything. Everything works as before.
Conclusion:
So far those are all the issues/problems i've encountered. Everything else appears to be running smooth. If any new issue/problem comes up, i'll be updating this post.
