Update.

About 14 months ago, I built my first computer, also my first hackintosh. A small white box.
Reporting that it has been solid and reliable.
It is fast and has more power than I ever begin to use.
Runs cool, completely silent, very low power usage.
No complaints about any component.
OS updates come and go. Everything just works.

The box compares very favorably to my wife's recent Apple MacMini, (which has had some intermittent heat issues).

The Thermaltake case is small, and I could have gone much smaller with an external power brick. Next time, I might.
This first time, I wanted it functional above all else, and it is.
From past experience, it will likely serve me for many years.

I threw in an extra drive and installed Mint Linux, a flavor of Ubuntu, a flavor of Debian.
Only used it a little, but it seems to have drivers for most everything I use.
Maybe someday. Nice to have the option.

If I could buy a new box today, it might be an intel NUC. Toy-lust is an ugly thing.
