Dear Rheneas: We have similar systems (same motherboard and chipset basically. And I have what appears to be the same issue: the system and setup was rock solid on Mojave and High Sierra. On update to Catalina it will run for about 30 minutes and then just randomly reboot. Am not sure how to diagnose the kernel panic(if any) or the cause for the shutdown. Appreciate thoughts from folk. Thanks.

Just one brief question. It’s unclear from you post: do you mean to say the following two changes should be added to the Clover config:

com.apple.iokit.IOUSBHostFamily 83FB0F0F 83FB3F0F
com.apple.driver.usb.AppleUSBXHCI
83F90F0F 83F93F0F

Thanks, Carl

Yes, those should be added to the config.plist. I use Clover Configurator. Go to Kext and Kernal Patches in the left column, then type the items in the KextsToPatch tab.

I haven't solved my problem of the system quitting after about 5 minutes. I'm going try updating to 10.15.1, hoping that might solve the problem.

Also curious - what kind of hard drive(s) are you using? I have two - Samsung EVO 960 for Windows 10, Samsung EVO Plus 970 for Catalina. Windows does not quit after 5 minutes. Wondering if I should switch slots!

So my system is still unstable under Catalina 10.15.1 By way of drives, I use: a 1TB Samsung 960 NVME / M.2 EVO SSD in the M.2 slot and then two SSD (a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E500B/AM) and Kingston 500 GB SSD in the SATA). I also have a 6TB HDD.

Catalina is currently installed on the M.2 NVMe drive. But I have also tried it as a fresh install (and an image) on each of the other SSDs and on an an HD. The result is the same which is the system is unstable and reboots about every 20-30 minutes

In terms of kexts, what I have is completely standard: FakeSMC 1.8; FakeSMC_ACPISensors; FackeSMC_CPUSensors; .. etc and Apple ALC 1.4.3, Lilu 1.3.9, USBInjectAll 0.7.1 and WhateverGreen 1.3.4. All of these are in the EFI\Clover\Kexts\10.15 folder and they show in Hackingtool as being loaded. I am coming around the to the point of view that these crashes and reboots are the fault of something in Catalina actually, and not the setup. My Hackingtosh setup has been stable for years: through Sierra, High Sierra and Mojave. And then suddenly it has this instablity under Catalina.. Hmmm..

Okay. So I have been digging into this repeating crashing & rebooting in Catalina more. When I search the system.log for "cause" (launch console.. then click system.log, then top right search for "cause") I get the following:

Dec 1 13:41:33 carl-mac-desktop Installer Progress[109]: Quitting because there are no phases. There are no connected processes. The UI is not showing.

This error shows up in every instance of a reboot.

When I search for the word "reboot" I see:

Dec 1 13:41:52 carl-mac-desktop suhelperd[727]: objc[727]: Class KeychainMasterHandler is implemented in both /usr/lib/libIASAuthReboot.dylib and /System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/Resources/suhelperd. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.

Again this error shows up in every instance of a crash & reboot. This looks like some problem in Catalina. Appreciate any ideas folk may have. Thank you

Thank you for your replies, all very helpful. I've been struggling and unable to install 10.15.1 - first as a test on an external SSD before risking my unstable install on the EVO 970 Plus. The best I could manage was the intaller getting about 75% done before getting a black screen. The guide on TonyMac hasn't worked for me.

Meanwhile, I'm using Mojave 10.14.6 from an external SSD.

you need to install internal, and manage USB well (inside)

the troubles on the CM GA-Z170X-UD5 is unknow, and CM GA-Z170X-UD5-TH are different:
number or bus, but also Thunderbolt connector inside, the controller of USB isn 't the same

Hi there @rheneas and @carljharris3141 and @maclinuxg4

Yes you can boot Catalina on an external USB drive as long as the USB port is one that is active throughout the boot process. Stay clear of the USB-C ports controlled by Thunderbolt (and the ports controlled by the Genesys hub chip, although these are all internal). This leaves the "TH" motherboard with those 8x Type-A ports on the back-panel. The non-TH motherboard has 5x Intel Type-A ports on the back-panel.

USBInjectAll and the Catalina Port-Limit Removal Patch will make all Intel motherboard ports available, but only once the system has booted.

As for the crashes - even with Catalina installed on an internal drive - check which memory-fix driver you are using. Also check you do not have any duplicated hackintosh-specific kexts in both EFI & Library/Other. If you do it is recommended you remove any from Library/Extensions and rebuild the kext-caches.

Next check if any USB ports are "bridges" to SATA. Use Hackintool and you will see any associations. If there is one (I don't have the motherboard to check) then do not use that USB port.

Finally, if you are using any EVO "Plus" or "Pro" NVME SSDs, just check the forums here for any advice
