Finally ... After a few hours of trial and error : I checked once more the BIOS settings and made sure that they were according to Tonymac's recommendations . Then I copied USBInjectAll.kext in the EFI/Clover/Kext/Other folder of the USB installer, and I believe that this last step was the factor that allowed High Sierra to be installed successfully.

Good work!

once you have your USB 2/3 working with USBInjectAll and XHCI port limit removal patch, do yourself a favour and create a custom SSDT for USBInjectAll.kext.
That way USB ports with continue to work with USBInjectall.kext even when upgrading to newer OS.
You won't need to wait to have the correct port limit patch,
Especially with the older boards.

here are the main guides to do this

Here are two walkthroughs I created for my systems
please note the custom dsl is specific to your own machine, so you have to create it, don't copy my SSDT-UIAC-xxxx.aml file unless you have exact same hardware.

Thank you ! There is some hefty reading :). Hands up to Rehabman, and also to those ( like you) who can really understand the intricacies to adapt to their hardware. I'll give it a try in the days to come , though I measure the difficulty and know the limits of my understanding of this complex subject :).

I can't make the audio devices to work, is there any recommendations on which version of the kexts to use?

As you probably know hackintosh solutions are very different for different Mobo/cpu/ hardware and os versions.

Your signature is incomplete so we don’t know what your motherboard is - just make sure you enter correct details (eg motherboard info in your signature is incorrect) .
My guide here is a specific solution for high Sierra 10.13.4 and Asus 9xx series motherboard Haswell chipset.

The main guide listing different solution for sound (HDMI/display port) in desktops is..

However built in sound solution will be different again depending on your motherboard.

Oops sorry about that.

My current setup is very similar to yours:

Maximus Hero VII
i7 4790K
GTX 960

and you are in 10.13.4
did you configure same as in my installation guide?
i.e.
For built in sound (lilu.kext and appledHDA.kext and the HDAS-HDEF patch)

for hdmi/display port sound using Geforce (lilu.kext and nvidiagraphicsfixup.kext and the patch for 10.13.4 for appleHDAcontroller.kext?)

Usually the newer releases of kext tend to be the better.

Oh... I see

I was neglecting the lilu.kext. I think the link on OP is wrong.

BTW it's working. Thank you very much!

great! yup appleHDA.kext and NvidiaGRaphicFixup.kext are plugins for Lilu.kext
so need lilu.kext to work.
Lilu.kext is a platform to provide easier patching of kext, library, and program. Many plugins have been developed for this kernel extension.
